A fragment of a cast copper-alloy Roman brooch of Two-piece Colchester type, datping to the first century AD. Only the head remains. The wings, coil, bow, foot and catchplate are all missing. The notch that held the spring chord is obvious and there is some corrosion where the coil would have sat, suggesting that it was composed of iron. The spine of the bow may have had a dotted raised decoration as some is still evident on the head and the small piece of remaining bow.The brooch has a mid-green patina. It measures 17.22 mm long, 5.33 mm wide, 3.9 mm thick and weighs 2.5 grams.

An incomplete cast copper-alloy Roman brooch of P-shape type with a sheath-foot, dating from the second to third centuries AD. The brooch seems to be complete, save for the hinge-pin, now missing. The brooch consists of a cylindrical head with intact axial cross-bar pin and a notch at the centre of the head to accommodate the hinge mechanism; there is a small symmetrically-positioned additional lug flanking the brooch neck at other side directly below the cylindrical head and then a highly arched brooch body, which is triangular in cross-section and P-shaped in profile. The arched por…

A fragment of a cast copper-alloy Roman brooch of probable Sawfish type, dating to the first to second centuries AD. Only a portion of the brooch body and catchplate are intact; the brooch is missing its upper half including head, hinge pin mechanism and pin. Additionally, the base of the remaining brooch segment seems to have broken off, suggesting a more elaborate foot knop. The remains of the brooch body or bow consist of a lightly arched profile, with a flat reverse face and a high relief outer surface, creating a 'bell-curve' cross-section with raised ends. The outer surface of t…

The remains of the brooch consist of a cylindrical head with iron axial pin bar still intact, followed by the brooch neck arched at a 90-degree angle and tapering downwards into a sub-oval cross-sectioned body. In the middle of the cylindrical crossbar there is a further component composed of copper-alloy, the remains of which are semi-circular, which suggests that this is a large upper portion o…

A fragment of a copper-alloy cable (2 strands) bracelet, probably dating from the third to fourth centuries AD. The bracelet fragment consists of a small portion of two oval-sectioned copper-alloy strands twisted around each other without a central core; one of the strands has been thinned and curved to create an end-hook, which would have secured the bracelet into its other missing end, probably an eye. National finds advisor Sally Worrell describes cable bracelets as having two, three or four cables wound around each other or around a central core. These bracelet types mostly had…
