An incomplete cast copper alloy Roman T-Shaped brooch, c. late 1st century AD. The cross-bar and top half of the bow are still present, as well as a portion of the hinge-pin. The cross-bar arms are cylindrical and have been pinched closed to hold the hinge mechanism with a gap in the middle of the back for the pin. The cross-bar ends are open and it is decorated on the front surface with three deep vertical grooves. Remains of iron corrosion within the cylindrical cover suggest that the pin mechanism and pin itself were composed of iron. The bow and brooch body begins wider at the top…

An incomplete cast copper-alloy Roman initial T-Shaped brooch, dating to c. late 1st century AD. The cross-bar, hinge, small section of pin, bow and catchplate are present. The wings are cylindrical in shape, completely encircling the cross-bar pin; the ends appear to be open. A small section of pin is still protruding from the hinge point facing backwards. The bow tapers from a wide highly arched neck to a very narrow foot with tiny knop, giving the brooch an overall 'C-shaped' profile. The brooch has suffered some damage, but it would appear there are two verticle raised lines runni…

A cast copper-alloy Roman brooch of Polden Hill type, dating to c. 1st century AD. The remains of the brooch consist of a cylindrical cross-bar, arched bow and catchplate; the chord, spring and pin are missing. The top of the bow has a recess that would have held the chord. The spring covers are semi-cylindrical in shape and it is possible to see a circular hole at each end where the spring pin would have held the spring snugly in place; the outer surface of the cross-bar is decorated with indentations to form a pattern. The bow is decorated with a raised spine running from the notch…

An incomplete cast copper-alloy bossed centre disc brooch, c. 2nd-3rd century AD. It has suffered some breaks to the perimeter of the brooch, particularly at the junction between the outer flan and the raised boss. The central boss is conical in shape and has a raised central pellet; the base of the boss is emphasized by means of a thin raised circular ridge. No further decoration is visible. The reverse of the raised boss portion is hollow. Positioned on opposing sides of the remaining brooch plate, the reverse also holds the catchplate and simple hinge pin lug; the pin and most …

A cast copper-alloy Roman disc brooch, c. 2nd century AD. The brooch is nearly complete, missing only its hinge pin and most of its decoration. The outer surface still holds traces of blue and red enamel, although it is impossible to discern the pattern and no interior copper alloy cells are present. The reverse is undecorated, but still holds both the hinge pin catchplate and the two hinge lugs themselves with a portion of an iron axial pin to allow the larger pin to pivot. The brooch measures 19.6 mm in diameter, 1.8 mm thick and weighs 2.06 grams. Cf. Hattatt 2007, fig. 203 fo…

An incomplete cast copper-alloy Roman brooch of Headstud type, c. 2nd century AD. Just below the headloop are two incised lines in saltire; directly below is the raised circular headstud with recessed central circle; the beginnings of a second incised saltire are positioned directly below. An incomplete copper-alloy Roman T-shaped brooch, possibly a headstud brooch, c. mid-1st to mid-2nd century AD. The head loop is damaged at the top and the majority of the pin is missing; otherwise it is complete. The head loop is connected to a cylindrical spring or hinge cover, which has a central gap in the cover to accommodate the pin. It is uncertain whether this is a hinge or spring as the remains are incomplete within the cover. The neck has a sharp ninety-degree angle with a possible moulded decoration similar to those of headstud types; no further decoration is visible. The b…

A Roman copper-alloy enamelled hinged T-Shaped brooch with toothed edge. The brooch is largely complete, save for one of its crossbar arms and hinged pin, in addition to some decorative damage long the toothed edges and missing enamel inlay. From the top of the brooch, the crossbar has an angled flat front and a curved reverse face, holding the remains of an iron hinge and central gap, which would have held the now missing pin. A large toothed crest on the upper bow has a hole in its upper lobe, which may have been intended for a chain, but is similar to earlier Colchester types w…
