Object type: HORSESHOE
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Nottinghamshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
An incomplete iron horseshoe probably of post-medieval to modern date. The horseshoe measures 120.6 mm long, 146.9 mm wide and 14.6 mm thick. It weighs 178.9 g. The width of the horseshoe is larger than most medieval horseshoes that typically range from 80 mm to 125 mm (Clark 1986, 4), which suggests this example is of later date.

A fragment of an iron and copper alloy knife of medieval or post-medieval date. The fragment consists of the copper alloy guard and the stump of the iron blade and hilt. The guard is broadly rectangular in plan and profile but in plan is narrowed towards the centre. It is a stretched hexagon in cross-section. One edge of one end of the guard has a projecting lip; this feature does not appear on the other end off the guard. The stump of the blade is heavily rusted, but it is thick at on one side than the other indicating that this object was a single edged knife. The lip on the guard i…

Object type: CANNON BALL
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Derbyshire
Workflow stage: Published
An iron post-medieval cannon ball, probably dating to the 17th century. It is cylindrical. It measures 94mm in diameter and weighs c.3000g. The size suggests that it was intended to be fired from a demi-culverin, a medium cannon in use during the late 16th and 17th century. During the First English Civil War, the manor house at Barton Blount, where this cannon ball was discovered, was garrisoned by Parliamentarian soldiers and a skirmish was fought nearby with Royalist soldiers from Tutbury Castle. It is therefore quite likely that this dates to 1644-1646.
