A fragment of a cast copper alloy button or possibly cuff link. The front has a design of a heart within a circular field with traces of a densely stippled background. The missing half probably depicted a second heart surmounted by a central crown.
This design was used to commemorate the marriage of Charles Stuart and Henrietta Maria of France (AD 1603). Similar designs were used throughout the 17th century, and buttons and cufflinks of comparable form are known in other materials, including silver. The reverse has traces of the corroded attachment loop.
