Object type: BOOK FITTING
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Devon
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A complete cast copper-alloy hooked clasp, possibly for a book fitting, and most likely medieval to post-medieval in date c. AD 1450-1650. The object is made of two plates held together by rivets. The plates share the same broad form, comprising a rectangular body, firmly joined along the base edge, but tapering into a squared terminal along the upper split-end. The terminal tapers gently into the plate creating concave curved edges. The front plate is flat. There is a decorative, incised, vertical line on either side of the clasp, approxim…

A complete copper-alloy fob seal with surviving intaglio, dating to the post medieval period, c. AD 1700-1850. There is a cylindrical loop at the top of the object for attaching the fob to a chain. The loop is decorated with grooves creating a ribbed effect. The fob frame is formed of two mirrored sides, each forming an omega shape. The sides are fused at the top (below the attachment loop) but part as they reach the die frame, resulting in four feet. There is a convex protrusion below the attachment loop but from here the curvilinear arms taper …

Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL
County: Devon
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A small, incomplete openwork copper-alloy object of uncertain function and possible late early-medieval date (c. 9th-11th century). It is formed of a broadly flat, openwork plate with curvilinear sides, broken at one, possibly both, short ends. The widest point of the plate is around halfway along it. The object may terminate in a devolved animal head, seemingly plain, but slightly corroded. The plate is formed of conjoined cells of elongated scrolled C shape which joined to form a central arcuate cross. Two larger such cells abut back-to-back at the terminal, above which two sma…

Object type: BUCKLE
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Devon
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An incomplete cast copper-alloy double-looped buckle probably of post-medieval date. The buckle was formed of a pair of oval loops; one has been lost to an old break at the junction of frame and pin bar. The extant loop has an effectively flat reverse, with possible central concavity from the casting process. The front is bevelled both externally and internally, the latter more steeply. There are hints of very small protrusions at each end of the pin bar. A thick sheet copper-alloy pin is still attached.  Measurements: 15 mm in length, 22 mm in width and 2.35 …

Object type: PALSTAVE
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Devon
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A corroded copper-alloy axehead fragment: probably the terminal of a Middle Bronze Age palstave (c. 1500-1100 BC). The cutting edge is shallowly rounded and somewhat abraded. The sides only barely perceptibly flare to this edge. The break, a shallow diagonal, appears old; the solid cross-section revealed suggests that this was a palstave. Such an identification is reinforced by the presence of a central casting seam visible on the side. No decoration appears to survive on the fragment, though the patina is pitted in a few places. Measurements: weight 48.87 g

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An incomplete Roman cast copper-alloy brooch of unusual form (c. 1st to 3rd century). It consists of a long, thin trapezoidal plate connected by an angled section to the head, probably for a hinged pin. It is unclear to what extent the head survives; the brooch is broken at the start of a section that is expanded slightly from that from which it extends. It may have developed into a tubular head to retain an axis bar for a hinged pin; there are hints of a central pin slot. As noted, a small angled section connects this to the plate; it is set at an angle of just over 45 degrees.&n…

An incomplete late early-medieval to medieval copper-alloy stirrup-strap mount best classified as being of Williams Class A, Type 11A, and dating to c. AD 1050-1125. From the base of of the plate a rectangular angled flange projects backwards, at an oblique angle. The flange is also recessed on each side, that is, it does not attain the full width of the base of the plate. The flange is perforated twice; the corroded remains …

An incomplete Roman copper-alloy strap-mounted and skirted terret ring. Only the base of the main ring now survives, with slightly more surviving one side of the skirt. While much of the brooch survives, the integral pin is missing, as is the catch-plate. At the top of the bow is the head of the brooch. The head was probably made of four coils of circular cross-section, two either side of the bow, but the internal coil that would have developed into the bow has been lost to an old break. The coils on the other side of the bow may have been squashed flat. When viewed head uppermost, the first coil to the left of the pin and …

The upper surface also has a central pit within a slightly raised border.
