A copper-alloy strap fitting of post-medieval date, possibly a sword belt fitting. It comprises a sub-rectangular plate that has an integrally cast, thickened suspension loop at the top. The suspension loop is oval in shape with a central circular perforation (int. dia.: 6.0mm). At the centre of the plate is a second circular perforation flanked on either side by two smaller circular rivet holes that retain the highly corroded remains of iron rivets. To each side of the front face the edges have a border consisting of a single vertical groove with a series of V-shaped notches creating…

A corroded but complete cast copper-alloy mount of post-medieval date. The mount consists of two lobes connected by a trio of transverse ridges, all moulded in low relief. On the lower surface there are slight recesses in the lobes. At each end is an integral lug which curves round and overlaps the other by 10.1mm; one lug is set in slightly more than the other, which abuts the edge. The mount's construction and decoration suggests a c. 17th-century date; a similar artefact can be found illustrated in Read (2001, 36; no. 314). This piece is of a variable mid-green colour, with some ar…

A cast copper-alloy mounted fastener from an early post-medieval sword belt. The object is formed of a symmetrical mount with integral circular terminal. The terminal is affixed to the toggle, which tapers underneath. The circular element is decorated on its visible, upper surface by a floral or solar pattern of central dot with curved lines radiating out moulded in low relief. The main body consists of a series of points incurving to waists and terminates in a trefoil end: two waists and two points. Centrally aligned with the lowermost protruding points is a rivet hole that retain a …

A medieval cast copper-alloy bar mount in the form of a central circular element flanked by two small sub-rectangular outer ends. The centre and end elements are domed with concave backs and convex fronts, the end elements far less exaggerated. The ends each have a pierced hole through though the centre which holds a separate copper-alloy rivet; the holes are recessed on the lower surface. The separate rivets are circular in cross-section and flush with the front of the mount while projecting slightly from the back. The front is decorated with five transverse incised lines across the …

A medieval copper-alloy strap-fitting, either a strap-mount set across a strap, or a strap-end at a strap's terminal. It is formed of a cut rectangular sheet folded widthways at its centre. The attachment end retains a small central rivet. Towards the fold is a large separate rivet/stud with circular sectioned shank and domed head decorated with cross-hatching (12.3mm in diameter). The base of the shank is narrowed slightly at the point at which it travels through the sheets. The ends of the rivets have been made flush with the sheets. One of the folds is abraded at the attachmen…

A complete openwork post-medieval strap-fitting (belt mount) with a pair of integral prongs. The mount is formed of a pair of back-to-back C-shaped elements with scrolled terminals and a protruding pellet at each outer edge. Where they meet there are trefoilate extensions at the mount's centre. The C-shaped elements are delineated by finely incised lines. The prongs are located at the centre of each outer edge. They are rectangular with rounded corners in cross-section and travel upward before curving in and downwards towards the centre. One of the prongs has been bent to the side…

A small decorative post-medieval cast copper-alloy mount with a pair of spikes on the reverse, bent inwards such that they overlap slightly. The mount has an elongated, broadly triangular body, with transverse ridges at the uppermost terminal and a scallop-shaped protruding terminal at its base. The upper surface of the mount is rounded, the main element with engraved lines that follow the sides to create a rough triangle. On the flat lower surface the attachment spikes are arranged in line just off centre in the main element. The object has a dark lacquer coating surviving on both su…

An incomplete cast copper-alloy four-way strap junction of post-medieval date. The piece is formed of four circular loops arranged around a central sqaure; one of the loops has broken through. The loops curve into the square's field. The central element is recessed apart from a central pellet, perhaps to take in inlay that has now been lost. While the upper surface is moulded the lower surface is flat. The piece has a red/brown colour with patches of light-green and off-white corrosion product. This, the form and finish, suggest a date for this piece perhaps in the 17th or 18th ce…

A cast copper-alloy belt stud or mount moulded in the form of a scallop shell of post-medieval date. The shell in semicircular and sits above a trefoil base. Five triangular grooves form the shell's ridges. On the back are two integral pointed lugs, both slightly off centre, and the lowermost truncated. The object has corroded to a red-brown colour with light-green corrosion product in patches, particularly on the back. A similar strap fitting has been recorded on this database, ref. CORN-88BC72.

A complete openwork post-medieval strap-fitting (belt mount) with double-perforated trefoil terminal at one end. At the other end is a triple knop. Across its pointed-oval openwork body is a chevron-shaped bar. On the reverse are two spikes, both turned inwards, located in from both terminals. Such spikes indicate a 17th-century date for this object. Many such mounts have been recorded on this database, including NMS-4079E4. This item now has a red-brown colour.

A post-medieval copper alloy strap slide or mount. The slide is formed of a flat top with long square sectioned spikes projecting back from the ends and then bent inwards so the ends overlap broadly forming an open rectangle in profile. The front has three wider rectangular sections with curved in waists between. The middle rectangular section has two regularly spaced indents on each side and the ends have one indent on each side which extends into a transverse incised line. At the tips are diagonal grooves that suggest ropework. The projecting spikes start on the back of the f…

A small, medieval cast copper-alloy strap loop with integral external rivet. The frame is rectangular, almost square. The sides of the frame are rectangular in cross section. There is an integral circular sectioned rivet projecting outwards 2.6mm from the centre of the base, though also bent, the end of which is flattened. The internal width is 6.7mm. Egan and Pritchard (1991, 232; fig. 147) illustrate examples of this type, though none quite this small; they date these from the late 13th to the end of the 14th century AD.

A damaged and incomplete cast copper-alloy mount, possibly a propeller shaped belt stiffener of late Roman date. The mount consists of a central circular element (diameter 16.4mm) flanked to one side by a sub-rectangular tab. There is a transverse break at the circumference of the roundel where a possible equivalent tab might have emerged. The roundel is decorated with longitudinal ridges, those towards the edge curved to follow its shape. The grooves between are decorated with incised rocker arm. The tab begins with a transverse ridge, beyond which the main field has two longitu…

A post-medieval cast copper-alloy mount in the shape of an acorn with two integral rivet spikes on the back. The acorn has an elongated oval shape with a thinner 'nut' with a small projecting knop at the top, and a broader cup below divided from a smaller elongated oval (possibly a second acorn) by a waisted collar. The smaller element has been bent upwards as a result of old damage. The back is flat. The attachment spikes are circular in section, and taper towards the ends. The ends have both been bent to one side, shortly after emerging. The rivets emerge from the backs of the cups,…

A post-medieval cast copper-alloy mount with two integral rivet spikes on the back dating to the 17th century, now incomplete following old damage. It is comparable to SOM-410496 on this database, found in the vicinity. This latter shows that the present example is incomplete and how it would once have appeared. This example has also been bent slightly in profile. The mount is an openwork quatrefoil in shape with two of the internal lobes joining, not having been fettled. On the outer edge of one petal is a rounded projecting knop, slightly truncated; and on the outer edge of …

A copper-alloy mount of post-medieval date. The mount is of flat elaborate quatrefoil form with lobes that protrude at the angles. A pair of integral pointed lugs curve broadly in the same direction on the lower surface. The upper surface is seemingly undecorated, though has a polished quality absent on the lower surface. This method of attachment using integral lugs is characteristic of the 17th century. An example of this date, similar in form to this object, can be found illustrated in Read (2001, 34; ref. 278). The object has a general dark-green patina.
