A small, incomplete openwork copper-alloy object of uncertain function and possible late early-medieval date (c. 9th-11th century). It is formed of a broadly flat, openwork plate with curvilinear sides, broken at one, possibly both, short ends. The widest point of the plate is around halfway along it. The object may terminate in a devolved animal head, seemingly plain, but slightly corroded. The plate is formed of conjoined cells of elongated scrolled C shape which joined to form a central arcuate cross. Two larger such cells abut back-to-back at the terminal, above which two sma…

A medieval finger ring of iconographic type.  The bezel is hexagonal and contains a depiction of God the Father holding the figure of Christ on the Cross.  This was the conventional way to portray the Trinity in the late medieval period, though the dove representing the Holy Spirit seems to be absent. The hoop of the ring is twisted.  The twists closest to the bezel are engraved with seven five-petalled flowers and a lupin (?).  The five-petalled flower is a recognised reference to the five wounds of Christ and the number seven may be an allusion to the seven sorro…

A medieval finger-ring in three fragments, formed of a flat hoop terminating in two clasped hands with scalloped cuffs. The ring carried a rudimentary engraving, which consists of an inscription punctuated by simple stars, circles and foliate motifs. The inscription reads: 'de don co . . '. The inscription is either a corruption of the popular medieval sentiment 'de bon coer' ('of/from good heart') or it signifies the gift of/from a heart (using the noun 'don' meaning 'gift'). The finger-ring is silver-gilt, and dates from the la…

An elaborate copper-alloy Roman T-shaped bow brooch of probable 2nd-century AD date, incomplete insofar as it is missing its pin. The brooch is robust, with both an elaborated head and bow. Traces of orange-brown corrosion product in the pin slot, at the end of the wings and at the catch-plate suggest that the missing pin was made of iron. The wings are broadly tubular, with a slightly squashed profile. The front the wings are decorated with blind-drilled holes, three either side of the bow, the outermost of which to each side have abraded through. Below the holes, traces of…

A fragmentary copper-alloy Roman initial T-shaped brooch dating to AD 50-150, now just comprising the upper bow and head, the latter now broken.  One of the wings is seemingly intact, while the other is broken at its junction with the bow. On the reverse, the broken wing is also abraded revealing the channel for the axis bar; the pin, of course, is missing. The extant wing is broadly circular, though squared off at the top. An unusual porcine fitting of the insular La Tène tradition, probably dating from the 1st century BC to 1st century AD. It is possible this fitting is for a vessel, but it is so far unparalleled in type. There are two other ‘head’ fittings known (OXON-6E3722 and HESH-06696B), but they are very different in design, and this find does not appear to be related to them. The lack of the portrayal of tusks, a hint of a dorsal ridge and large, pointed, forward facing ears are not definitive enough to label this example a wild boar, and so it is classed as a porcine of mix…

A fragment of a copper-alloy blade probably from a sword of Late Bronze Age date. The fragment is pointed oval in cross-section with smooth curve on both surfaces and no discernible mid rib. There are old patinated breaks at each end and down each side, obscuring the original shape. However, in one corner the fragment does appear to flare out slightly, though this may be illusory; the width is generally consistent. It is 28.05mm long, 20.7mm wide,3.7mm thick. It weighs 10.37grams. The surfaces are slightly corroded.
