Object type: STEELYARD WEIGHT
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Dorset
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An incomplete copper-alloy casing from a medieval drop-shaped weight, formerly containing a lead core. The body was once piriform, expanding to a rounded base from a point at the top. A broken loop projects from a flattened summit, above a collar of two circular concentric ridges formed by a pair of grooves. The loop only exists to one side. Around 50% of the copper-alloy casing survives, with losses at two main point one the sides, leaving a small remnant between them at the base; the lead core has been lost entirely. Measurements: 63 mm in maximum height and has a maximum …

Object type: SEAL MATRIX
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Devon
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A corroded copper-alloy medieval seal matrix, probably official in nature, incomplete only insofar as its loop has broken through, dating from c. AD 1200-1350. It is of pointed oval form and has a flat central ridge on the reverse; a pieced loop at one end is now broken through. The central design is composed of a canopied niche with angled top containing the upper half of a Virgin and child statue - possibly representing a shrine. Set below, under another angled canopy, is a kneeling monk in prayer. The inscription at the edge is both abraded and corroded; unfortunatel…

County: Devon
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An incomplete copper-alloy Roman developed T-shaped brooch (Colchester derivative) dating to c. AD 75-150. Much of the bow is missing. The wings are possibly broken through an original cylinder; nothing of the brooch apparatus survives. At the centre is a longitudinal slot, presumably to accommodate the expanded head of a hinged pin. The head of the bow arches back from centre of the wings before dropping downwards and tapering to the break. The bow is a sub oval in cross section at the old break. The head is decorated with double stepped low triangular moulding, now wor…

A flat piece of copper-alloy sheet broadly of semicircular form, now incomplete, with two originally conical sheet rivets, now squashed to secure them. This is probably a vessel repair of medieval to post-medieval date. Small losses have occurred to the apparent semicircle on the curved edge. A cast copper-alloy medieval strap-fitting: probably the frame from a strap-clasp (possibly a buckle). The frame is trapezoidal, with its edges projecting slightly at the outer edge, the outer edge within recessed between to take a folding plate (now missing). The bar at the other end is narrowed. The artefact has corroded to an even mid-grey colour. The frame has been very slightly bent in profile. A small cast copper-alloy fragment with enamelled decoration, probably of Roman date (c. AD 100-250). The object is now of irregular form, with breaks to all sides. It may have formed part of a (plate) brooch, though such an identification is by no means certain. The reverse is flat and undecorated, now slightly corroded. The front is decorated with very low relief moulded open pointed ovals, conceivably petals, that radiate from a former central point. Parts of three such petals survive, their spacing implying six originally. Within each petal is decayed enamel that now appears a gree…

A piece of cast iron shot, probably a cannon ball, dating from the post-medieval period, c.  AD 1550-1750. It is spherical, with a medial casting seam. At one point is a small raised circular area, presumably a plug deriving from the manufacturing stage. The size and weight suggest that this could be for use in a cannon such as a saker which had a c. 3 1/4 to 3 3/4 inch bore. There is no evidence of impact. Measurements: Diameter: 83 mm (c. 3 1/4 inches), Weight: c. 2,250 g It should be noted that there are other uses for iron balls of this size such as in a crush…

The butt and loop have been lost to an old break, beyond the point at which the flanges develop. A cast lead spindle whorl or possibly weight. It is broadly conical with a flattened top and base with a slightly tapering circular hole running through the centre. It has received some slight abrasions at the top. It is 22.5 mm in diameter at the base, 15.5 mm at the top, it is 10 mm high and weighs 28.20 g; the hole is 7.5 mm in diameter at the base, 7 mm at the top. Plain spindle whorls and weights were cast locally in lead from the Roman period onwards and such plain and rough examples are hard to date precisely although most are late medieval - post-medieval.

The frame is D-shaped in cross-section, with a flat lower surface. In plan it is flattened slightly at each end of the pin bar. The outside edges of the buckle are bevelled and decorated with alternating raised and sunken panels around the inner and outer edge of the frame giving a crenellated effect.
