County: Oxfordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An incomplete post-medieval unusual dress hook of composite construction (c. 16th century). The front plate would have comprised three hollow-domed bosses, only two of which survive following old breaks. The bosses are apparently undecorated; both are becoming detached from the plate at places. That set uppermost is missing its counterpart. When complete, these upper bosses would have had a central perforation. In the perforation of the extant boss is located one end of a separate copper-alloy angular wire loop, retained in place by a lead fill in the hollow reverse. The lower boss, s…

An incomplete cast copper-alloy hooked tag dating to the post-medieval period. The artefact has survived well and all of its attributes are intact, with the exception of the tip of the curved hook, the remainder of which has been twisted to one side. At the other end of the mount is a trapezoidal attachment loop. The body below is heart-shaped, though with a straight top formed of the base of the loop. The reverse is flat apart from a slight hollow at the centre, while the upper surface of the body has moulded decoration on a sunken field within a raised border. The field features sym…

A damaged and incomplete copper-alloy dress hook dating to the post-medieval period, missing its hook. The object has been cast in one piece with an openwork, moulded upper surface; the lower surface is flat. The hook has been lost in its entirety following old damage. The plate is sub-circular, with a rectangular bar attached to it at two large circular pellets. The aperture between the bar and the top of the plate would have formed the loop.
