Record ID: DEV-58A33D
Object type: SHOT
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Devon
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A piece of cast iron shot, probably a cannon ball, dating from the post-medieval period, c. AD 1550-1750. It is spherical, with a medial casting seam. At one point is a small raised circular area, presumably a plug deriving from the manufacturing stage. The size and weight suggest that this could be for use in a cannon such as a saker which had a c. 3 1/4 to 3 3/4 inch bore. There is no evidence of impact.
Measurements: Diameter: 83 mm (c. 3 1/4 inches), Weight: c. 2,250 g
It should be noted that there are other uses for iron balls of this size such as in a crush…

Object type: UNIDENTIFIED OBJECT
Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: Oxfordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A iron wedge-shaped object of unknown date. It is of elongated sub-trapezoidal form with elaboration at the wide end. The narrow end is c. 13.6mm wide. From this the piece expands gradually in width along its length to attain a maximum width of 36.5mm. From this point the object could potentially have formerly narrowed to a point over a far shorter length. Set in from the widest points were perforations c. 7.1mm in diameter. If this were the case, both holes have been abraded through at the shorter sides. Mitigating against this interpretation is the symmetricality of the object as fo…
