Object type: BUCKLE
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Somerset
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A copper-alloy double-looped buckle of post-medieval date (c. 17th century), incomplete in so far as it is missing its pin. In plan, one loop is D-shaped and the other is trapezoidal. The upper surface of the frame is bevelled externally and the underside is flat. At the centre of the outside edge of the D-shaped loop is a double transverse ridge which would have acted as a pin rest. At each end of the pin bar is a triple moulding. The buckle is corroded and most of both faces are coated in black lacquer. A similar buckle has been published by Whitehead (1996, 91; ref. 568) dated c. A…

Object type: BROOCH
Broad period: ROMAN
County: Somerset
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A fragment from a Roman cast copper-alloy developed T-shaped brooch dating to c. AD 75-150. The fragment consists of the abraded bow and foot with catch-plate on the reverse; the head and pin are both missing. The bow is flat with rounded edges. At its centre it expands into a flattened lozenge shape. This shape is decorated on the front with a moulded lozenge within a lozenge recess. Within the moulding is a further recess with traces of red enamel. The bow curves gradually in profile. The catch-plate is abraded at the foot. For similar brooches see Hattatt (2000, 303; refs. 318, 319).

A corroded, but complete shield-shaped cast copper-alloy harness pendant bearing a zoomorphic device: a peacock in his pride. The object is of the 'heater' shield shape, that is, with a flat top, and sides which curve steeply to a point. From the top edge a suspension loop protrudes centrally at ninety degrees to the pendant; it is angled forwards in an oval pierced loop above a low double transverse ridge on the upper surface. The pendant's upper surface features moulded decoration in low relief the form of a peacock with tail fanned out behind them, with tail below, legs splay…

A corroded cast copper-alloy double-looped buckle frame of post-medieval date (c. AD 1500-1650), incomplete in so far as it is missing its pin. The loops are of pointed oval form; they incurve towards the pin bar. The pin bar itself is narrowed and terminates in a small pointed knop at each end. The points are central triangular protrusions on the outer edges; one features a transverse groove which would have acted as a pin rest. The frame is bevelled both externally and internally on its upper surface; the former is more gradual. The pin bar is therefore trapezoidal in cross-sect…

A copper-alloy stud with a slightly convex lozengiform head dating to the late medieval or early post-medieval periods. The head is decorated on the upper surface with a saltire cross and a central pellet within a square of pellets. The square sits diagonally within a beaded border. On the reverse is an off centre shaft of square cross-section bent to one side and twisted slightly at the tip. This mount has a parallel in an example illustrated in Read (2001, 27, 32; ref. 251) which is dated to the 15th or 16th century; see also SOM-CB5247, NARC-3A7A32, NMS-E2BAD5 on th…

A cast copper-alloy foot from a later medieval to early post-medieval cooking vessel. The object is splayed at the base in a simple, out-turned, pad-like foot of trapezoidal cross-section, slightly irregular. The front of the foot is decorated with three prominently moulded ribs: one central, the other towards the sides, much obscured by concretion and corrosion product. The break is curved and irregular. The flat back and base make an obtuse angle of about 110 degrees. As noted, the object has become corroded post-deposition, and is largely a variable green colour. This form of foot …

A copper-alloy fragment probably of medieval to post-medieval date, but of uncertain function. In its current state it is formed of a thick plate of rectangular cross-section with rounded corners which turns through a right angle. The shorter arm appears squared off and possibly complete; the terminal of the longer arm forms a blunt point, but also seems to be complete. A thin sheet is riveted to the underside of the longer arm by two rivets with expanded heads, both still in situ. On the back of the shorter arm is a rounded triangular moulding from the centre of which a thin longitud…

A rim fragment of a medieval to post-medieval cast copper-alloy vessel, now of irregular sub-triangular form. The fragment appears to be the everted rim of a cooking vessel approximately 70mm in diameter at the flat top. It appears to have broken before the return. The rim is thickened very slightly internally. Externally is a low longitudinal casting ridge with a flaw that seems to have been repaired using a copper-alloy rivet. This external face is darker, perhaps from sooting. Crudely made cast copper-alloy vessels were widely used from c.AD 1200-1700 for serving and cooking. Bu…

The hoop is broadly D-shaped in cross-section, with a flat internal surface (int. dia.: c. 19.2mm). A dark-green patina survives in small patches, particularly on the underside of the bezel. A corroded and incomplete cast copper-alloy stirrup-strap mount of early Norman (medieval) date (late 11th/early 12th century AD) which can be categorised as a Williams Class A, Type 11A mount (1997, 58ff.). The object is sub-triangular in form and is now missing its trilobed apex loop as a result of an old, ragged break. The artefact has broken around and below the point of the apex loop: the uppermost perforation for attachment. A slightly corroded and bent rectangular double-looped buckle of post-medieval date. The longer sides are slightly incurved, the loops tending towards the trapezoidal from the rectangular. A copper-alloy spur rowel in the shape of a six-pointed star. The arms are hexagonal in cross-section all along their length. There is central circular perforation through the body of the rowel through which the rivet attaching it to the spur would have travelled (Dia.: 4.2mm). The arms are of uneven lengths, though only one appears to be truncated; it may have been that there were two slightly longer arms. The artefact is largely of a dark-grey colour with patches of probable tinning. There are diagonal file marks on the bevelled sides of the arms. Such rowels are undiagnos…
