A complete copper-alloy bifacial coin weight, for the Portuguese 'joe' gold coins, issued between AD 1760 and AD 1773. The value of 18 shillings indicated was equivalent to the 'half joe'/2 escudos coin (Withers & Withers 1995, 55). Both faces are marked with a small S above a large 18 above a small 4 . 14 1/2, all within a laurel wreath. This indicates a weight equivalent to that of 18 shillings. The 4 . 14 1/2 stood for the official weight of the coin (4 pennyweights and 14.5 grains). It has a diameter of 19.6mm and is 3.4mm thick. It weighs 6.85g/105.8 grains. As such it is n…

A copper-alloy seemingly unifacial coin weight for a half guinea of late post-medieval date. The coin weight is square in plan with a thin rectangular cross-section. One side is stamped with the letters P G, above the numerals 2 (doublestruck) and 16; the back is plain. Between the letters, and with its top slightly above is a stamped rectangle with engrailed sides, probably a local maker's mark. A copper-alloy button brooch of early-medieval date (5th - 6th century AD), of Class C. This example is incomplete in so far as its iron pin been lost to corrosion; a trace of corrosion product is present adjacent to one of the lugs (now so abraded that one cannot distinguish the pin lug from catch-plate). The rim is upturned (H.: 3.2mm) and very slightly flared. The upper surface is decorated with a central moulded anthropomorphic face-mask viewed straight on within a line border. The helmet is formed a pair of nested peltaic outlines. The eyebrows and nose are formed of a single T-s…

An early-medieval copper-alloy strap-end, classified as Thomas's (2003, 2) Class A, Type 1 (Trewhiddle style), slightly damaged at the attachment end. This would date the artefact to around the 9th century AD. The strap-end is flat in profile. The plate expands from a width of 10.0mm the attachment end to a maximum width of 13.5mm at the base of the split. From this point it tapers consistently towards an animal head terminal (W.: 6.8mm). The upper half of the split attachment end survives intact, pierced twice, though neither rivet survives. It has also been bent upwards. The lowe…

A post-medieval copper-alloy trade weight from the reign of James II (AD 1685-1688). The weight is circular with a wide raised rim on the top and slight central rise on the upper surface with concentric incised lines around. It is 19.7mm in diameter by up to 3.2mm thick and weighs 4.8 grams, 0.169oz. Though it has probably lost weight through corrosion it is siginificantly underweight for a quarter ounce weight, for which it is the usual module (see Biggs 1992, 51). When made the mass may have been refining through filing; numerous diagonal fine marks are visible on the lower surface.…
