Broad period: IRON AGE

Workflow stage: Published
A cast copper-alloy fragment moulded in the round in the form of a bovine head, possibly of Late Iron Age/early Roman date. The creature has a snout that curves upwards at the tip, broadly circular in cross-section, and with a triangular flat area on the tip's upper surface to represent a nose. The sides of the upper surface behind this are bevelled. Behind this are oval eyes moulded in low relief. At right angles to the back of the snout is a neck of sub-triangular cross-section. This has been truncated below the snout as a result of old damage. At the top, behind the eyes, are two a…

A copper-alloy ('latten') spoon handle terminal of the baluster seal knop type. There is just a stub of the stem of the handle surviving: enough to show that its cross-section was sub-oval with a diameter of c. 5.9mm. The knop begins with a shallow double circular collar; the baluster part then flares out to a width of 9.5mm. The baluster is decorated with longitudinally incised lines. Above the baluster are a further pair of collars, the upper larger and decorated with longitudinally incised lines. The knop then flares out into a sub-oval seal top, 13.8 by 11.6mm, though now abraded,…

Object type: SEAL MATRIX
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Somerset
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A fragment of a post-medieval copper-alloy pedestal type seal matrix with an oval sectioned handle, now mostly missing. The face of the seal is oval with a basic incised border around a ?weeping eye, the tears rendered by incised wavy lines below. The handle is broken just above the back of the seal face but would probably have had a suspension loop at the end; alternatively this may have travelled towards the centre of a multi-die matrix. Read (1995, 152) illustrates post-medieval seal matrices which he dates to the 17th century.

A copper alloy T-shaped brooch of early Roman date. This Wilsford type brooch is incomplete in as much as it is missing its pin. The cylindrical wings conceal the copper-alloy axis bar for the hinged pin. Their upper surfaces are decorated with two incised lines at each end. The head of the pin has a pointed projection for tensioning, but this is all that survives of the pin (loose). The bow has a D-shaped cross-section and projects forward from the wings. The upper bow has moulded decoration in the form of four ridges with central grooves either side of a central recessed rib. Its l…

A virtually complete copper-alloy clog or shoe clasp of late post-medieval date (AD c. 1790 - c. 1850). The main body is formed of three groups of transverse bars, one centrally and one at each end, with recessed V-shaped protrusions between the. At the centre of the two horizontal sides of the frame there are two opposing, 'bow-shaped' mouldings. At the centre of each of the two curved outer ends is a moulding with engraved, opposing oblique lines, which at one end acts as a pin rest with central groove. A fragment from a cast copper-alloy spoon of post-medieval date. The fragment comprises the top of the bowl and a short length of the handle tapering like a 'rat-tail' on the underside of the bowl. The handle is trapezoidal in cross-section. The break to the top of the bowl is diagonal and old, around the point at which the handle terminates. The fragment is largely grey but with some small patches of light-green corrosion product suggesting a leaded copper alloy.
