A copper-alloy apothecaries' weight of post-medieval/early modern date (c. 1600-1900). It is square in form and rectangular in cross-section. On one face is a stamped mark of value for one scruple (backwards lombardic letter E with crossbar linking to the top of the upright of a lowercase letter i), flanked to the right by a star; the other face is marked in an identical fashion.  Measurements: 8.5 mm by 8.5 mm, 1.09 g in weight See Withers and Withers (1995, 65) for a scruple weight. The mass of this object is a little less (almost 16%) than the standard weight for a s…

A probable Middle Bronze Age (c.1500-1100 BC) solid gold bead of annular form and biconical profile with a central perforation measuring 2.9mm in diameter. It is max.7.6mm in diameter at the centre, narrowing to c.5mm diameter at either end, both of which show areas of damage. The bead stands 5.3mm in height and weighs 1.91g. The bead is of similar form to several of sheet gold reported through the Treasure Act, namely HAMP-72E451 (2011 T526),GLO-46CA05 (2014 T358) and NMS-AEC678 (2013 T20), for the latter of which is written 'The gold bead is likely to date to the Middle Bronze A…

A spherical hollow copper-alloy artefact of probable post-medieval date: either a bead or a pin head. The object is formed of two hemispheres of sheet copper alloy joined by white metal solder at their respective bases. The top of each is perforated at its centre with a hole of c. 2.4mm diameter. Around each hole radiates multiple small, fine incisions. Also radiating from each hole, at seven equally spaced points, are diverging pairs of incised lines that extend to a circumferential incision just before the centre of the object. As these lines approach the centre of the object each i…

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A fragment of a cast copper-alloy spherical animal bell (crotal) of post-medieval date. The fragment comprises half of the lower of two hemispherical domes, the hemisphere naturally divided in two by the sound slot, and vestiges of the upper hemisphere broken around a sound hole, together with a raised circumferential join. The upper hemisphere would have had two circular sound holes with a rectangular tab projecting from the top between them. The upper hemisphere is seemingly plain from the small amount that survives. The sound slit on the lower hemisphere is flanked by an indente…

A fragment from the top of a bell of unknown date. The suspension loop is rounded a perforated. It is recessed on both sides compared to the top of the bell. From the few vestiges that survive the bell appears circular rather than faceted, and is fairly solidly cast. The breaks are ragged and old. There is a possible trace of iron corrosion product internally below the loop. The fragment is 20.5mm long, up to 15.9mm wide and up to 12.3mm thick; it weigh 6.99 grams.

A fragment from a post-medieval spherical animal bell ('crotal') cast in copper alloy (c. 17th century AD). The fragment consists of part of the lower half, part of the median rib, and a smaller part of the upper hemisphere, with ragged breaks and one broadly straight edge - the sound slot. One of the upper hemisphere's sound holes has been broken through; this and a counterpart would have been set at right angles to the sound slot. A shield shaped cartouche abuts the slot and may bear initials, now hard to discern. The lower half beyond is decorated with a lobed 'sun burst' pattern, …

A fragment of a copper-alloy blade probably from a sword of Late Bronze Age date. The fragment is pointed oval in cross-section with smooth curve on both surfaces and no discernible mid rib. There are old patinated breaks at each end and down each side, obscuring the original shape. However, in one corner the fragment does appear to flare out slightly, though this may be illusory; the width is generally consistent. It is 28.05mm long, 20.7mm wide,3.7mm thick. It weighs 10.37grams. The surfaces are slightly corroded.

A copper-alloy book clasp (hook piece) of late medieval or early post-medieval date. The artefact is generally flat a sheet-like, but has been bent slightly as a result of old damage. The main body takes the form of a lozenge truncated at each end. At the attachment end there is a basic, rectangular transverse protrusion on each side with an abraded terminal beyond. The rectangular arrangement is echoed at the other end of the lozenge. Beyond this, is a flared terminal with two notches that create a low central triangle. A separate iron rivet is retained within the flared terminal at …

A rectangular pierced copper-alloy plate, probably a medieval book clasp of Howsam type A.7. It would have been riveted to an equivalent plate by four rivets, located one towards each corner. The rivets have a circular cross-section, and all four survive in situ, their head flush to the surface of the plate. The plate is cusped to emphasise the corners, by an engraved V shape central at each short end, and smaller V-shaped lines towards the corner on the long edge. There are further, finer engraved lines between these latter, at each corner. There are also suggestions of incised diago…

An incomplete copper-alloy plate almost certainly from a medieval clasp. Half of the plate survives here, following a transverse break at the fold. The plate is sub-rectangular, with no frame recesses at the fold. There is a decoratively shaped attachment end, now slightly damaged but originally with four triangular cut-outs which would have created five knops, including those at the corners. Two knops have been broken off towards one of the corners (old damage). Engraved angled lines at the base of each knop emphasise each protrusion on the front. The front is decorated within a v…

At the flared end is a single central rivet hole; the iron rivet is corroded in place, holding a square copper-alloy rove. The end itself is bevelled slightly. A large quatrefoil cruciform mount with central boss cast in copper alloy of medieval date. The base of the mount consists of four trefoil arms, each with a rivet hole in the centre; parts of three rivets survive in situ. The edge of the base is bevelled. A medieval copper-alloy plate from a hinged plate-and-loop type book clasp dating from the late 14th or early 15th century. Only vestiges of the loop survive in situ around the copper-alloy axis bar at the narrow end of the plate (width 6.9mm). The plate was formed of one piece folded over on itself at the narrow end, this latter recessed to the sides to accommodate the loop. Each sheet is trapezoidal, expanding from the loop end to the attachment end which is straight. At the attachment end there is a rivet hole in each corner; both rivets survive in place. A copper-alloy hinged fitting of post-medieval date: probably a book clasp (c. 18th century). The object is comprised of two plates of comparable length, both broadly trapezoidal, with a slight curve, one with bowed sides. This latter has a plain outer surface and may thus be considered the lower plate. It is attached to the upper plate by a long, central tubular loop, which travels round an axis bar retained on the upper plate by two lateral tubes. The upper plate is perforated centrally at the other end, presumably to connect to the lower plate through a pin or stud, now missing. The…

A complete cast copper-alloy hooked clasp, possibly for a book fitting, and most likely medieval to post-medieval in date c. AD 1450-1650. The object is made of two plates held together by rivets. The plates share the same broad form, comprising a rectangular body, firmly joined along the base edge, but tapering into a squared terminal along the upper split-end. The terminal tapers gently into the plate creating concave curved edges. The front plate is flat. There is a decorative, incised, vertical line on either side of the clasp, approxim…
