A small circular cast lead-alloy button of post-medieval date. The concave back has an integral shank (broken before the loop) and a line from the mould. The convex upper surface has raised decoration with a pattern of small pellets depicting a double six-petalled flower with a raised dot in each petal and a central dot. A similar button has been recorded on this database, ref. LON-F18AB7, with another example published in Hume (1969, 89; Fig. 22), described as late 17th century.

Object type: POWDER MEASURE
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Somerset
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A cast lead-alloy cap from a post-medieval powder measure (c. 17th century). It has slightly flaring sides from top to bottom, at one point now squashed inwards, giving a sub-circular base which is open. Where the sides meet the top there are two attachment loops, one on each side, both squashed down against the sides. The top is slightly recessed at its circumference with low concentric ridges suggestive of a centring process. A seam is prominent on the side. The object measures 17.0mm in height, 23.2 by 18.3mm at the base and 18.1 by 17.5mm at the top (excluding the loops). Th…

Object type: CLOTH SEAL
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Somerset
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A complete two-part lead-alloy cloth seal, the two discs and the connecting rivet intact along with the connecting tab. The central rivet and front disc were stamped with a 'privy' or 'merchant's' mark. The mark has the letters ?P [...] with a knot design above and below within a line border. On the reverse is a are three incuse stamped capital letters arranged in an inverted triangle: V D // I. This was probably a cloth seal used by a weaver, dyer or searcher. The use of a privy mark suggests a 16th to 18th century date; many with incuse stamps are dated to the 17th century.

County: North Somerset
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A damaged and incomplete two-part lead-alloy cloth seal, one disc and the connecting rivet intact; part of one disc and the connecting tab have been lost following old damage. The central rivet and front disc were stamped with a 'privy' or 'merchant's' mark. The mark is unclear following the damage but has a central cross bar and numeral 2 to its right, a long vertical with further details at the top, now unclear. On the reverse of the other disc an incised 30. This was probably a cloth seal used by a weaver, dyer or searcher. The use of a privy mark suggests a broad late 16th to 1…

Object type: TOY
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Devon
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A fragment from a lead-alloy toy 'horn book' of post-medieval date, representing around 25% of the original object. It is from the bottom right hand corner of a rectangular plaque, and reads OP in a line, above TV in a line, above YZ in a line, with decoration below, all in low relief. The omission of the letter U is not unusual (Lewis 2012, 99). The decoration at the base is indistinct but may consist of a central cross flanked immediately by a diagonal line, then by four or five upright strokes: possibly representing a numeral (see Lewis 2012, 100). The letters are within a border c…

A post-medieval lead-alloy one-piece button of c. 16th-century date. It is circular in shape with a convex front and flat reverse. The upper surface is decorated with a moulded ?wheel of ?six spokes springing from a central pellet (the device may be floral but wear and corrosion has rendered it unclear). It seems to sit within a plain line border around the outer edge. On the reverse the integral oval-section shank with loop has been bent to one side. Similar buttons can be seen in Read (2005, 57) where they are dated to c. 16th century.

Object type: TOKEN
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Somerset
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An incomplete medieval to post-medieval cast lead-alloy circular unifaced token of Powell type 3 (c. AD 1250-1800). The token has a raised design of five straight lines radiating from a pellet at the centre to the raised edge on both sides. Around a third of the token has been lost to an old break to one side. Lead tokens had a wide variety of uses and were made locally; they are therefore hard to date precisely and could be Medieval or Post Medieval in date.

A damaged, now incomplete, post-medieval lead-alloy button. The button has a slightly convex front with a moulded design of a sunken six petalled flower with raised lines between each petal that emerge from a central rosette. There is a line border around each sunken petal in low relief. The edge is shaped to the curved edges of the petals, though with alternating lines and double pellets that protrude. The back is flat, though raised at its circular centre which corresponds with the sunken petals. At the centre is a raised line from which two stubs emerge to have formed a simple loop…

County: Oxfordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An incomplete post-medieval lead-alloy cloth seal of early 18th-century date. A disc survives, slightly damaged, from what was probably a four-disc seal from the series featuring a monarch's head. As Egan (1994, 60) states, the relief designs on these alnage seals are characterised by fine detail resulting from well-engraved dies. The disc bears a female bust facing left, that of Queen Anne (AD 1702-1714). The bust is surrounded by a border of short raised transverse lines and the legend ANNA REGINA. There is evidence for a loop at one point at right angles to the bust. The cloth seal…

The abraded, and slightly bent, terminal of a post-medieval cast lead-alloy (pewter) spoon handle of late 17th-century date. Only this element of the flat handle remains; the rest is lost to an old break, while its own terminal is unclear due to abrasions. It is broadly trapezoidal, tapering from an expanded terminal. On the front it is decorated with a raised cast floral design: a flower, possibly a tulip, with large head and leaves emerging from a central stalk; any design below the ground on which this sits is unclear. The reverse bears initials P . L in low relief. Measu…

An incomplete early post-medieval lead-alloy spoon (c. 16th century, probably later 16th). The spoon has a pointed oval shaped bowl and a hexagonal stem; the stem terminates in a 'seal top' knop. It is now damaged, and bent, with repairs by the finder, including a sleeve that holds together the broken stem, and glue reattaching two parts of the bowl that had become separated. In addition, the bowl has been bent and has suffered losses. No marks are apparent in the bowl, or on the stem. On the reverse, at the junction of bowl and stem, is a 'rat tail'. The faceted s…
