Cast copper alloy weight for a half Ryal (Rose Noble). The weight is circular and flat with a raised design on one side only. The design is of the king with sword and square topped shield standing in a ship with rectangular bow and stern and a rose on the side of the ship. It is 14.2mm in diameter, 3.2mm thick and weighs 3.55 grams, 54.8 grains. A full weight half ryal would have weighed 60 grains (Withers and Withers 1995, 68) but weights were normally made to the legal minimum weight which was slightly less and can lose weight through corrosion processes, the edges of this example…

Copper-alloy open type thimble or 'sewing ring' of late medieval or early post-medieval date. The sides are splayed and the base is wider than the top. The ring has fairly regularly spaced stamped triangular pits arranged in three to four rows around the sides. There is no evidence of a makers mark but it is badly corroded. It is 21.9mm by 19.3mm at the base and 11.2mm high; it weighs 5.13 grams. A medieval sheet copper-alloy domed thimble with sloping sides, now squashed. There are multiple circular drilled or punched pits in slightly irregular concentric circles on the sides and top. Just above the base, below the pits, is an incised line. The thimble is 25.15mm long and 17.2mm wide in its squashed state; it weighs 5.15g, but this weight included mud. The thimble is probably late medieval in date (AD 1400-1500). It was probably used for light duty sewing (Egan 1998, 265).

A copper-alloy late medieval annular buckle frame with central strap bar. The outer face of one side is decorated with incised grooves, forming lobes in between. The other loop has two constrictions on the outer edge, with a lobe at either side, the area between containing multiple transverse grooves. The front is bevelled internally and externally while the back is flat. The frame measures 31.2mm long, 27.3mm wide and 3.2mm; it weighs 7.24 grams. A similar buckle is illustrated by Whitehead (2003, 46), no.266, and is dated to c.AD 1400-1500.

Medieval or post-medieval plain cast copper-alloy double-loop buckle frame. The frame has two oval loops with bevelled outer and inner sides on the front; the back appears flat. The strap bar is narrowed with a triangular cross-section. The pin is missing but dark orange corrosion product at the pin bar shows that it would have been of iron. It is 24.9mm long, 20.3mm wide and 2.2mm thick, it weighs 3.0 grams. It is likely that simple forms like this were in use by c.1350 (Egan and Pritchard 1993:22, 82-3, cf no.332), and they continued into the 17th century.

The frame is oval with an offset and narrowed strap bar and offset outer edge recessed in the centre to take a sheet roller which survives in place. The outer edge has knops flanking the recessed centre. The upper and lower sides have a convex outer face. The frame is 19.5mm long, 4.75mm thick and 24.05mm wide and weighs 4.53 grams. Egan (2007, 95) illustrates a very similar example, no.590. He suggests (ibid:86) this type (Meols Type 11) dates to the medieval period (c.1250-1400 AD).

It has an old irregular break at the upper end. The oval foot projects forward and has a rounded end. It is 35.2mm tall, 23.3mm wide, 12.8mm thick; it weighs 38.06 grams. The foot would have been one of three on a complete vessel, which would have been used to hold water for hand-washing (Lewis 1987).

A post-medieval cast copper-alloy (latten) spoon bowl, detached from the stem following old damage. The bowl is sub-oval with a wider, more squared off end near the stem (the shoulders) and fairly straight sides. There is a maker's mark of I spoon R?, punched on the front of the bowl near the stem. This latter has been broken at its junction with the bowl. There are extensive traces of a white metal coating on the bowl's interior. A small circular cast lead-alloy button of post-medieval date. The concave back has an integral shank (broken before the loop) and a line from the mould. The convex upper surface has raised decoration with a pattern of small pellets depicting a double six-petalled flower with a raised dot in each petal and a central dot. A similar button has been recorded on this database, ref. LON-F18AB7, with another example published in Hume (1969, 89; Fig. 22), described as late 17th century.

A post-medieval copper-alloy fragment consisting of the neck and goad from a 17th-century prick spur. The goad is of elaborate quatrefoil shape as is conventional on these spurs, known as 'Scotch spurs' (Ellis 2002, 8-9; refs. 27, 28). The lobes of the quatrefoil are closed, rather than being openwork, as with no. 28 quoted, ESS-DAC0C3 and NMGW-69B4FE recorded on this database. A clipped post-medieval silver Irish sixpence of James I (AD 1603-1625), First coinage, initial mark bell, minted at Dublin, AD 1603-1604, Spink 6514. One edge of the coin has been bent up and the other down to create an S-shaped profile. Coins modified in this way are often referred to as 'love tokens'. The coin is very worn and may have been deliberately smoothed.

A cast lead-alloy cap from a post-medieval powder measure (c. 17th century). It has slightly flaring sides from top to bottom, at one point now squashed inwards, giving a sub-circular base which is open. Where the sides meet the top there are two attachment loops, one on each side, both squashed down against the sides. The top is slightly recessed at its circumference with low concentric ridges suggestive of a centring process. A seam is prominent on the side.
