Treasure case 2013 T308: Not Treasure and returned to finder A gold finger ring (posy ring), D shaped in section with a flat inner side. There is an incised inscription running around about two-thirds of the inside of the hoop. It reads 'Godly loue cannot remoue', all letters in lower case italics, apart from an initial upper case letter 'G'. The inscription terminates in a stamped maker's mark, possibly an upper case letter 'C'. The inscription is identical to one on a posy ring held by the British Museum (BM number 1961,1202.178), though the 'u's are rendered as 'v's on the B…

An extremely corroded and incomplete probable finger-ring of Roman date. The object appears to consist of a thickened bezel of rectangular form, rounded at the top from the ends of which extend shoulders and hoop in a continuous curve. The hoop has broken around halfway down each side with the truncated remains abraded to a point on both sides. The hoop is broadly D-shaped in cross-section, with a flat internal surface (int. dia.: c. 19.2mm). A dark-green patina survives in small patches, particularly on the underside of the bezel. Elsewhere the object is highly corroded with a green …

A complete Roman copper alloy finger ring with black glass intaglio. The bezel is widened and flattened; the shoulders are also relatively wide before tapering to a thin hoop around half way down the sides (min. W.: 2.8mm). There are some abrasions to the edges of the hoop and a recess formed through corrosion on the underside of the bezel. The bezel is very slightly raised in around the setting. The intaglio is bevelled externally leaving a flat oval central zone with design set in. The design (on the intaglio) is of a human figure, probably female, seated left and turned to the view…

A probably complete, but now squashed, gold finger-ring (mourning ring) of early- to mid-18th-century date. It has a rectangular bezel for a now missing setting. The bezel's long sides have been squashed in. The exterior is decorated with a pair of grooves that run all around. The hoop remains attached at one end of the bezel, but has been folded and partially torn at the junction, but has become detached at the other. At the end where the hoop remains attached it has been bent under the bezel, and squashed up towards it. Around halfway along the other part of the hoop has been pus…

A complete gold mourning ring with black enamel decoration and internal inscription, of post-medieval date, c. 1600-1750. The ring consists of a triangular sectioned gold hoop, with an exposed median ridge of gold. The exterior surface is decorated with heavy blue-black enamelling, which is lost in places, along with a trace of white enamel (probably from a depiction of a skull). The interior of the hoop is engraved with the inscription ‘Prepare to follow MC', in a curvilinear italic script, followed by a stamped maker’s mark consisting of a letter S inside a pent…

A medieval finger-ring in three fragments, formed of a flat hoop terminating in two clasped hands with scalloped cuffs. The ring carried a rudimentary engraving, which consists of an inscription punctuated by simple stars, circles and foliate motifs. The inscription reads: 'de don co . . '. The inscription is either a corruption of the popular medieval sentiment 'de bon coer' ('of/from good heart') or it signifies the gift of/from a heart (using the noun 'don' meaning 'gift'). The finger-ring is silver-gilt, and dates from the la…

A medieval finger ring of iconographic type.  The bezel is hexagonal and contains a depiction of God the Father holding the figure of Christ on the Cross.  This was the conventional way to portray the Trinity in the late medieval period, though the dove representing the Holy Spirit seems to be absent. The hoop of the ring is twisted.  The twists closest to the bezel are engraved with seven five-petalled flowers and a lupin (?).  The five-petalled flower is a recognised reference to the five wounds of Christ and the number seven may be an allusion to the seven sorro…
