A copper-alloy book clasp (hook piece) of late medieval or early post-medieval date. The artefact is generally flat a sheet-like, but has been bent slightly as a result of old damage. The main body takes the form of a lozenge truncated at each end. At the attachment end there is a basic, rectangular transverse protrusion on each side with an abraded terminal beyond. The rectangular arrangement is echoed at the other end of the lozenge. Beyond this, is a flared terminal with two notches that create a low central triangle. A separate iron rivet is retained within the flared terminal at …

A rectangular pierced copper-alloy plate, probably a medieval book clasp of Howsam type A.7. It would have been riveted to an equivalent plate by four rivets, located one towards each corner. The rivets have a circular cross-section, and all four survive in situ, their head flush to the surface of the plate. The plate is cusped to emphasise the corners, by an engraved V shape central at each short end, and smaller V-shaped lines towards the corner on the long edge. There are further, finer engraved lines between these latter, at each corner. There are also suggestions of incised diago…

An incomplete copper-alloy plate almost certainly from a medieval clasp. Half of the plate survives here, following a transverse break at the fold. The plate is sub-rectangular, with no frame recesses at the fold. There is a decoratively shaped attachment end, now slightly damaged but originally with four triangular cut-outs which would have created five knops, including those at the corners. Two knops have been broken off towards one of the corners (old damage). Engraved angled lines at the base of each knop emphasise each protrusion on the front. The front is decorated within a v…

A large quatrefoil cruciform mount with central boss cast in copper alloy of medieval date. The base of the mount consists of four trefoil arms, each with a rivet hole in the centre; parts of three rivets survive in situ. The edge of the base is bevelled. The arms are arranged at the cardinal points around a circular domed central boss with a stepped base and small flattened top. The surface of the boss has flattened strips and file marks suggesting that the object has been turned. The reverse of the boss is hollow. The object has a mid-green shiny patina. One of the sides of one of t…

A medieval copper-alloy plate from a hinged plate-and-loop type book clasp dating from the late 14th or early 15th century. Only vestiges of the loop survive in situ around the copper-alloy axis bar at the narrow end of the plate (width 6.9mm). The plate was formed of one piece folded over on itself at the narrow end, this latter recessed to the sides to accommodate the loop. Each sheet is trapezoidal, expanding from the loop end to the attachment end which is straight. At the attachment end there is a rivet hole in each corner; both rivets survive in place. This example measures 2…

An incomplete copper-alloy object of medieval date: probably a mount from a bridle bit of 13th- to 14th-century date. The original form of the artefact would probably have resembled the letter 'B'. What survives is a central sub-trapezoidal plate, from which emerge two truncated arms. The plate is thick and has a circular outward facing knop at each corner of its longest side. This and the two sides perpendicular to it are slightly incurved. The short side is wavy, and consists of the point of a triangle located centrally with small recesses at each side. The triangle is formed of the…

A copper-alloy annular brooch of medieval date (c. 13th century AD). It has a circular, cable decorated (twisted) frame seemingly formed of one single rotation, and thus falls into Deevy's Class 3a for which a 12th- to 14th-century date has been suggested (Deevy 1998, 17). It has a broadly circular cross-section. Around a pin constriction a cast pin with collar below the loop, surviving in situ. It is circular in cross-section and tapers to a point. It has been bent to one side as a result of old damage. Both brooch and pin have corroded to the same light-green colour. It measures …

A complete cast copper-alloy annular brooch of medieval date. The frame is formed of a thick wire of circular cross-section which, contra the definiton of medieval brooches, has no current pin constriction. However, it has been broken as a result of old damage, possibly at a former constriction; the ends have been neatened and overlap each other by c. 4mm. The object otherwise has the module and delicacy of a brooch; it now has an internal diameter of c. 19.0mm. A pin of circular cross-section survives on the frame, its tip overhanging the edge of the frame, though with very shallow c…

Its piriform (drop-shaped) frame is flat at the front and the outer edge has a small rebate (step down) around the periphery. Each side of the frame, on the front face, are three equally spaced collets; the tops of some are abraded. Two of the collets contain settings of a soft white paste, probably calcium carbonate. Medieval - post-medieval cast copper-alloy single loop buckle frame, missing its pin. The loop is oval with flattened edge acting as the pin/strap bar. The loop is D shaped in section with a flat back. All the way around the front are deeply incised, regular spaced diagonal lines creating a crude ropework. The frame is 30.1mm long and 28.3mm wide; it weighs 5.71 grams. A similar frame is illustrated by Whitehead (2003, 25), no.122 which he dates to c.1450-1550 AD

A copper-alloy late medieval annular buckle frame with central strap bar. The outer face of one side is decorated with incised grooves, forming lobes in between. The other loop has two constrictions on the outer edge, with a lobe at either side, the area between containing multiple transverse grooves. The front is bevelled internally and externally while the back is flat. The frame measures 31.2mm long, 27.3mm wide and 3.2mm; it weighs 7.24 grams. A similar buckle is illustrated by Whitehead (2003, 46), no.266, and is dated to c.AD 1400-1500.

Medieval or post-medieval plain cast copper-alloy double-loop buckle frame. The frame has two oval loops with bevelled outer and inner sides on the front; the back appears flat. The strap bar is narrowed with a triangular cross-section. The pin is missing but dark orange corrosion product at the pin bar shows that it would have been of iron. It is 24.9mm long, 20.3mm wide and 2.2mm thick, it weighs 3.0 grams. It is likely that simple forms like this were in use by c.1350 (Egan and Pritchard 1993:22, 82-3, cf no.332), and they continued into the 17th century.

Medieval cast copper-alloy buckle frame missing its plate and pin. The frame is oval with an offset and narrowed strap bar and offset outer edge recessed in the centre to take a sheet roller which survives in place. The outer edge has knops flanking the recessed centre. The upper and lower sides have a convex outer face. The frame is 19.5mm long, 4.75mm thick and 24.05mm wide and weighs 4.53 grams. Egan (2007, 95) illustrates a very similar example, no.590. He suggests (ibid:86) this type (Meols Type 11) dates to the medieval period (c.1250-1400 AD).

A damaged and incomplete medieval buckle with integral hollow box plate cast in copper alloy (15th century AD). The frame is almost entirely missing apart from a very small part of the side at the junction. At the junction of frame and plate is an oval perforation. Retained in place is a long wire pin of circular cross-section, its tip bent to one side. It has corroded to a more red colour than the box plate and was of a different alloy. A thin, waisted element connects the frame and the trapezoidal plate. The box plate is hollow to accommodate the strap which was held in place by a p…

Medieval buckle with elaborate openwork plate of heavily tinned copper alloy (c. 13th century AD). The frame is rectangular with a protruding lip at the centre of its outer edge with a groove to act as a pin rest. The pin itself is looped in situ around the frame but has been significantly truncated as a result of old damage. The plate is formed of a single thick sheet folded round on itself at the frame end.
