Post-medieval cast copper-alloy double-loop buckle frame with rectangular loops, bent in profile and now missing its pin. The loops are trapezoidal in cross section. The outer edges of both loops are straight other than a central rectangular projecting lobe. There is an incised line running down the centre of each projection acting as a pin rest. There are smaller projecting knops at the ends of the narrowed strap bar, also bifid. As noted, one of the loops has been bent upwards and twisted slightly as as result of old damage. The frame is 38.0mm long, 24.0mm wide and 3.5mm th…

Object type: STEELYARD WEIGHT
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Devon
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A curved fragment of the outer cast copper-alloy casing of a medieval globular steelyard weight. It would originally have had a lead core held within the complete casing. The fragment has irregular breaks all around its edge, but bears a decoratively cast shield in relief. The shield has a straight top and convex sides meeting at a point at the bottom with a raised design of a lion rampant on it. The fragment measures 39.4mm long, 37.9mm wide and the casing is c. 1.9mm thick; it weighs 23.65g.

Object type: STRAP FITTING
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Devon
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A small, medieval cast copper-alloy strap loop with integral external rivet. The frame is rectangular, almost square. The sides of the frame are rectangular in cross section. There is an integral circular sectioned rivet projecting outwards 2.6mm from the centre of the base, though also bent, the end of which is flattened. The internal width is 6.7mm.
Egan and Pritchard (1991, 232; fig. 147) illustrate examples of this type, though none quite this small; they date these from the late 13th to the end of the 14th century AD.

Object type: BUCKLE
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Devon
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A medieval or post-medieval plain cast copper-alloy double-looped buckle frame. The frame has two oval loops with bevelled outer sides on the front; the back appears flat. The strap bar has a triangular cross-section. The loop of the iron pin survives corroded in situ at the centre of the pin bar, with dark orange corrosion product at the facing outer edge. One of the loops is somewhat distorted and has been bent upwards.
It is likely that simple forms like this were in use by c.1350 (Egan and Pritchard 1993, 22, 82-83, cf. no.332), and they continued into the 17th century.

Object type: BUCKLE
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Devon
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A medieval cast copper-alloy single looped buckle. It consists of an oval frame with a narrowed and recessed strap bar. The frame is bevelled externally on its upper surface; the lower surface is flat with some bevelling internally. At the centre of the outer edge is a recessed zone with seven grooves; the central of these would have acted as a pin rest. The pin survives bent around the strap bar and is a copper alloy wire, rectangular in cross-section, which is blunted at the end and bent downwards slightly. Being greener than the dark grey of the frame the pin is of a different alloy.

A corroded and slightly abraded cast copper-alloy post-medieval dress fastener in the form of a scallop. This is the hook section of such fasteners, with the hook broken transversely as it begins to curve back. The plate is convex and moulded in relief with radiating grooves. The reverse is plain and recessed. At the top of the shell is a small attachment loop, abraded through. A further pair are located one either side at the base. A parallel can be found illustrated in Read (2008, 174; ref. 656), there classified as his Early post-medieval Class A, Type 7. This piece has corroded to…

A rim fragment of a medieval to post-medieval cast copper-alloy vessel, now of irregular trapezoidal form. The thickened rim is slightly bevelled and thickened internally. The curve of the rim is very gradual. There is some pitting on both surfaces and some smoothing externally.
Crudely made cast copper-alloy vessels were widely used from c.1200-1700 for serving and cooking. Butler and Green (2003, 15) state 'there is evidence that (cast copper alloy) metal cooking vessels became increasingly common during the 13th and 14th centuries'. Although earlier copper alloy vesse…

A large hook-piece from a copper-alloy post-medieval book-clasp. It is sub-rectangular in shape, with a flared attachment end; the other end is squared off with a central rectangular curved hook. The main body of the clasp is 26.8mm in width, flaring to a maximum of 30.5mm at the attachment end.
At the flared end is a single central rivet hole; the iron rivet is corroded in place, holding a square copper-alloy rove. The end itself is bevelled slightly. Floral decoration seems to have been stamped in the upper two thirds of the main field: a rose to the right of a second ste…

A copper-alloy possible thumb rest from a tankard lid (or similar) of post-medieval date. The piece consists of a short rectangular plate, rebated on one side, from the top of which emerges a thick bifurcated terminal. Each prong is twisted towards it tip giving the appearance of rams' horns. There is a deep groove on one side, the rebated surface, within the central V shape created by the terminal. An extremely corroded possible copper-alloy coin: possibly a Spanish re-validated maravedis coin. These are often called 'cob' coins: they were crudely made in Spain initially and later in the Americas for use in the Spanish colonies. The coinage was re-valued and consequently these are often countermarked. The flan is an irregular shape, slightly squared off in places, and the designs and stamps indiscernible. Cf. DOR-324563 of similar mass.
