Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A corroded cast copper-alloy double-looped buckle frame of post-medieval date (c. AD 1500-1650), incomplete in so far as it is missing its pin. The loops are of pointed oval form; they incurve towards the pin bar. The pin bar itself is narrowed and terminates in a small pointed knop at each end. The points are central triangular protrusions on the outer edges; one features a transverse groove which would have acted as a pin rest. The frame is bevelled both externally and internally on its upper surface; the former is more gradual. The pin bar is therefore trapezoidal in cross-sect…

A corroded and incomplete cast copper-alloy stirrup-strap mount of early Norman (medieval) date (late 11th/early 12th century AD) which can be categorised as a Williams Class A, Type 11A mount (1997, 58ff.). The object is sub-triangular in form and is now missing its trilobed apex loop as a result of an old, ragged break. The artefact has broken around and below the point of the apex loop: the uppermost perforation for attachment. There are two further circular holes through the flange, one towards the corner, the other set further in. The flange is of the common right angle type as d…

A crude side scraper formed from a tertiary debitage flint flake of Late Neolithic to Early Bronze Age date. The scraper is formed from a leaf-shaped flake with a notched void at the distal end: this is edged with cortex on the dorsal face and is probably a natural void. The ventral face shows conchoidal ripples and the bulb of percussion, alongside a small bulbar scar. The dorsal face has three main longitudinal removals in the same plane as the ventral, the central one being far wider. A long edge, the lefthand edge on the dorsal face, has been retouched creating a basic cutting/scr…

A lead mould of medieval date for a groat of Henry VI, in two parts. The parts are formed of flat rectangular bars with corresponding diagonal ends at the 'coin end'. The sides are generally perpendicular to the main faces and the outer surfaces are not embellished; they are, however, scratched, with linear depressions in places, but with no marks for aligning the two parts. As implied, there is an impression of a coin towards each end with the diagonal finish. The impressions are of the faces of a groat of Henry VI: they measure c. 27.1mm in diameter each. Running from the impress…

Although the thickness of the parts varies in places they fit together well. As implied, the…

Object type: PALSTAVE
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Somerset
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A late Middle Bronze Age/early Late Bronze Age cast copper-alloy palstave (axehead) of unlooped type. The palstave is corroded and pitted. There is not much difference in width between septum and blade; the particular narrowness of the blade suggests an ancillary use as a chisel. The low flanges are abraded but gradually widen from the butt to the mid point, narrowing again towards the stop ridge with which they are fused, creating an elongated oval shape in profile. Just beyond the stop ridge are pronounced lateral protrusions; such lugs or 'trunnions' are known on chisels, but also …

A cast copper-alloy pin now independent of its frame, probably from a medieval annular buckle. It is solidly cast, with a cross-section in the shape of a rectangle with rounded corners. The oval loop is broken such that around just over half of it survives. There is a rectangular ridge at the junction of the loop and the shaft. This is decorated with four transverse incisions, creating five ridges. The pin tapers slightly to a rounded tip. The object now a dark-brown colour with much corrosion and pitting. A copper-alloy spoon handle terminal of the baluster knop type. The terminal starts with a small circular knop with collar in the centre of a biconvex disc. Below the disk the terminal narrows, then expands slighty to an oval knop with median incised line. Below is a waist at around the centre of the knop before the object flares to a larger oval knop. Below this the terminal narrows with two final collars and then the narrow handle. The handle has broken just after the narrowing and has been lost. A copper-alloy ('latten') spoon handle terminal of the baluster seal knop type. There is just a stub of the stem of the handle surviving: enough to show that its cross-section was sub-circular with a diameter of c. 3.4mm. The knop begins with a double circular collar; the baluster part then flares out to a diameter of 8.2mm. Above the baluster are a further pair of collars. The knop then flares out into a sub-circular seal top, c. 12.6mm in diameter and flat on the upper side. This type of spoon knop was common from the mid-16th to the mid-17th century.
