A twisted fragment consisting of approximately a quarter of a cast copper-alloy bracelet or armlet of late Roman date (c. 4th century AD). The fragment consists of the bracelet's terminal, the hook end, with abraded hook extant. The bracelet is rectangular with rounded corners in cross-section. In profile it has been twisted to one side, then round on itself such that it abuts the side of the hooked end at right angles to it. The bracelet expands in width gradually from the hook end. A silver gilt Medieval mount in the form of the Holy Rood. The piece is a plain cross bearing the haloed figure of Christ crucified. Two standing figures flank the cross, representing Mary on Christ's left, and John the Evangelist on his right (as we view it). A scrolled panel across the top of the cross probably bore the legend INRI (Iesus Nazarenus Rex Iudiorum (Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews)) but this is now worn. The base of the cross and the figures of Mary and John stand on a base with a flat top and wide pyramidal…

Description: Rectangular bar-shaped ingot with concave ends. The upper and lower surfaces and the sides are hammered smooth, with ancient abrasions.
Metal analysis: Surface metal analysis conducted at the British Museum by the Department of Conservation and Scientific Research indicated an approximate silver content for the ingot of 81%, the remainder being copper, iron, zinc, lead, gold and tin. This surface analysis is likely to give a slight overestimate of the silver content of the core metal as corrosion alters the composition of the surface of the ingot by preferentially leac…

A post-medieval copper-alloy fragment consisting of the neck and goad from a 17th-century prick spur. The goad is of elaborate quatrefoil shape as is conventional on these spurs, known as 'Scotch spurs' (Ellis 2002, 8-9; refs. 27, 28). The lobes of the quatrefoil are closed, rather than being openwork, as with no. 28 quoted, ESS-DAC0C3 and NMGW-69B4FE recorded on this database. The lobes in the lateral plane are far more elegantly finished than the other pair. The neck is lozengiform compared to the base of the goad, and set at 45 degrees to it. It is decorated with fine transv…

A post-medieval cast copper-alloy double-looped buckle, incomplete in so far as it is missing its pin. The frame is formed of two oval loops with a central narrowed strap bar of trapezoidal cross-section. Possible traces of iron corrosion product at the strap bar suggest that the pin was made of iron. The frame is 'D' shaped in section with a flat back and rounded front. There are projecting circular knops at the outer corners of the frame on both loops and rounded knops at the top and bottom of the strap bar. The pin is missing. A cast copper-alloy stirrup-strap mount of late early-medieval to medieval date (c. late 11th century AD). This tapering pear-shaped mount can be classified as a Williams Class A, Type 10A mount, based on its decoration in the English Urnes style.

A damaged and incomplete copper-alloy post-medieval buckle plate. The plate was formed of one copper-alloy sheet, cut and bent over on itself. It is broken in half, at the point where it would have looped round the buckle frame. From the broken point it continues with plain rectangular tabs on either side before narrowing to a waist of 7.7mm. The squared off terminal is flared out at 11.9mm wide. In addition to this hole at the terminal there is another hole central with the widest point; neither rivet survives. No decoration is visible on either surface. The metal is a general…

A post-medieval cast copper-alloy (latten) spoon bowl, detached from the stem following old damage. The bowl is sub-oval with a wider, more squared off end near the stem (the shoulders) and fairly straight sides. There is a maker's mark of I spoon R?, punched on the front of the bowl near the stem. This latter has been broken at its junction with the bowl. There are extensive traces of a white metal coating on the bowl's interior.
The bowl shape is consistent with a latten trifid spoon in latten dated c. 1680 by Homer (1975, 46; ref. f), thought it is similar to the slightly earli…
