A copper-alloy post-medieval hexagonal button with flat top and faceted sides. Between the inner circles and the basal edge are indistinct scrolled motifs in each field. A central integral rectangular shank has been broken through at the drilled hole as a result of old damage. A probable button formed from a pair of fused medieval late Tournai copper-alloy jettons of Crown type, AE MARIA GRACIA PL legend, c. AD 1415-1497, cf. Mitchiner 663ff. The pair of jettons are fused together with some sort of material between them. The edges have been curved down giving a dished shape with convex front and concave reverse. The centre is almost flat but the edge curves down 45 degrees with clear evidence of deliberate shaping in the bevelled rim of the upper jetton. The lower rim is less bevelled as the curve is more upright at this point but it continues the curve …

Two pieces of copper-alloy casting waste. They are both slightly concave as though they have fomed on a surface. Though with irregular sides both are broadly of quadrilateral form. Both surfaces of both pieces are rough with cooling lines suggesting they were formed from molton metal. The pieces are not distinctive and could be of any date from the Bronze Age onwards although they are evidence for specialist, high temperature, metal working.

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A complete two-part lead-alloy cloth seal, the two discs and the connecting rivet intact along with the connecting tab. The central rivet and front disc were stamped with a 'privy' or 'merchant's' mark. The mark has the letters ?P [...] with a knot design above and below within a line border. On the reverse is a are three incuse stamped capital letters arranged in an inverted triangle: V D // I. This was probably a cloth seal used by a weaver, dyer or searcher. The use of a privy mark suggests a 16th to 18th century date; many with incuse stamps are dated to the 17th century.
