Cast copper alloy weight for a half Ryal (Rose Noble). The weight is circular and flat with a raised design on one side only. The design is of the king with sword and square topped shield standing in a ship with rectangular bow and stern and a rose on the side of the ship. It is 14.2mm in diameter, 3.2mm thick and weighs 3.55 grams, 54.8 grains. A full weight half ryal would have weighed 60 grains (Withers and Withers 1995, 68) but weights were normally made to the legal minimum weight which was slightly less and can lose weight through corrosion processes, the edges of this example…

A post-medieval copper-alloy coin weight for a rose ryal of James I. The obverse depicts the shield of British arms on a rose struck at an angle to the flan, and the reverse is a crown above XXXIII // S within a circular border. There is a crowned I countermark in the top right corner of the reverse. The coin weight is 19.4mm square by 4.3mm thick and weighs 149.8 grains (9.7g). The coin weight is 24% light compared to its official (lighter) weight of 196.5 grains (Withers and Withers 1995, 68). A copper-alloy uniface weight for a noble. The weight is circular and flat with a raised design on one side only. The design is of a facing ship with fore and aft castles. It is 16.9mm in diameter, 4.1mm thick and weighs 6.28 grams, 96.9 grains. The metal is pitted in places, especially on the lower surface. A full weight noble would have weighed 108 grains between AD 1412 and 1464 (Withers and Withers 1995, 68); the earlier noble had a higher mass. A square double-sided copper-alloy coin weight of post-medieval date. The weight is for a unite (20 shillings/laurel) of Charles I (1625-1632; Withers and Withers 1995, 12-13; ref. XXs e). The top left corner of the upper surface is counter stamped with a crowned 'C'. The stamp is typical of square coin weights of Charles I (Withers and Withers 1995, 67). One side is stamped with the letters P G, above the numerals 2 (doublestruck) and 16; the back is plain. A complete copper-alloy bifacial coin weight, for the Portuguese 'joe' gold coins, issued between AD 1760 and AD 1773. The value of 18 shillings indicated was equivalent to the 'half joe'/2 escudos coin (Withers & Withers 1995, 55). Both faces are marked with a small S above a large 18 above a small 4 . 14 1/2, all within a laurel wreath. This indicates a weight equivalent to that of 18 shillings. A copper-alloy square coin weight for a spur ryal of James I, tariffed at XVIs VId indicating it related to coins of the revalued 2nd coinage, 1612-1619. These weights were replaced by round ones with similar designs post 1632 (Withers and Withers 1995, 38). The coin bears the common countermark of a stamped crowned I in the top left corner of the reverse. The obverse design has been struck off centre. The coin weight measures 16mm by 16mm, 3-4mm thick and weighs 5.64 grams (87.0 grains); it is 11-12% light.
