Object type: BROOCH
Broad period: ROMAN
County: Somerset
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A fragment from a Roman cast copper-alloy developed T-shaped brooch dating to c. AD 75-150. The fragment consists of the abraded bow and foot with catch-plate on the reverse; the head and pin are both missing. The bow is flat with rounded edges. At its centre it expands into a flattened lozenge shape. This shape is decorated on the front with a moulded lozenge within a lozenge recess. Within the moulding is a further recess with traces of red enamel. The bow curves gradually in profile. The catch-plate is abraded at the foot. For similar brooches see Hattatt (2000, 303; refs. 318, 319).

Object type: BUCKLE
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Somerset
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A copper-alloy double-looped buckle of post-medieval date (c. 17th century), incomplete in so far as it is missing its pin. In plan, one loop is D-shaped and the other is trapezoidal. The upper surface of the frame is bevelled externally and the underside is flat. At the centre of the outside edge of the D-shaped loop is a double transverse ridge which would have acted as a pin rest. At each end of the pin bar is a triple moulding. The buckle is corroded and most of both faces are coated in black lacquer. A similar buckle has been published by Whitehead (1996, 91; ref. 568) dated c. A…

The bracelet is broadly C-shaped in plan, with a rectangular central portion flanked on each side by an expanded lobe. The front and sides are cast in one, the sides flat and the front convex. A separate plate follows the curved line of the sides and was attached to the edges of the front giving a hollow front. The sides each terminate in a domed mammiform boss with central pellet; these flank the outer surface of the front. Each of the bosses is decorated with narrow depressions around it, …

Object type: SCRAPER (TOOL)
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Somerset
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A crude side scraper formed from a tertiary debitage flint flake of Late Neolithic to Early Bronze Age date. The scraper is formed from a leaf-shaped flake with a notched void at the distal end: this is edged with cortex on the dorsal face and is probably a natural void. The ventral face shows conchoidal ripples and the bulb of percussion, alongside a small bulbar scar. The dorsal face has three main longitudinal removals in the same plane as the ventral, the central one being far wider. A long edge, the lefthand edge on the dorsal face, has been retouched creating a basic cutting/scr…

Object type: PALSTAVE
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Somerset
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A late Middle Bronze Age/early Late Bronze Age cast copper-alloy palstave (axehead) of unlooped type. The palstave is corroded and pitted. There is not much difference in width between septum and blade; the particular narrowness of the blade suggests an ancillary use as a chisel. The low flanges are abraded but gradually widen from the butt to the mid point, narrowing again towards the stop ridge with which they are fused, creating an elongated oval shape in profile. Just beyond the stop ridge are pronounced lateral protrusions; such lugs or 'trunnions' are known on chisels, but also …

Object type: COIN MOULD
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Somerset
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A lead mould of medieval date for a halfpenny possibly of Edward III, in two parts. The parts are formed of broadly flat rectangular bars with squared off ends and slightly bowed sides. The sides are generally perpendicular to the main faces and the outer surfaces are not embellished; they are, however, scratched, with linear depressions in places. Two pairs of lines on the sides, both off centre, one slightly closer to the 'coin end', indicate the alignment of the parts when put together. Although the thickness of the parts varies in places they fit together well.
As implied, the…

Object type: BUCKLE
Broad period: MEDIEVAL

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A cast copper-alloy pin now independent of its frame, probably from a medieval annular buckle. It is solidly cast, with a cross-section in the shape of a rectangle with rounded corners. The oval loop is broken such that around just over half of it survives. There is a rectangular ridge at the junction of the loop and the shaft. This is decorated with four transverse incisions, creating five ridges. The pin tapers slightly to a rounded tip. The object now a dark-brown colour with much corrosion and pitting. The loop has been bent to one side, the tip slighly to the other. The size of …

A cast copper-alloy double-looped buckle of post-medieval date, incomplete only in so far as the iron pin is highly corroded with only its loop surviving. The broadly D-shaped loops are bevelled externally on their upper surface; bevelling echoed internally on the lower. In the centre of each outer edge is a protruding squat fleur de lis. The lis are defined by an transversly incised line across their base, and circular punches in their side fleurs; there is an incised line along the lobelike central fleur. The pin bar features small lobes at each end; as noted, the loop of the iron p…

A copper-alloy spoon handle terminal of the baluster knop type. The terminal starts with a small circular knop with collar in the centre of a biconvex disc. Below the disk the terminal narrows, then expands slighty to an oval knop with median incised line. Below is a waist at around the centre of the knop before the object flares to a larger oval knop. Below this the terminal narrows with two final collars and then the narrow handle. The handle has broken just after the narrowing and has been lost. The break is old and corroded; the piece is generally corroded, with red/brown metal wh…

Object type: SPOON
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A copper-alloy ('latten') spoon handle terminal of the baluster seal knop type. There is just a stub of the stem of the handle surviving: enough to show that its cross-section was sub-circular with a diameter of c. 3.4mm. The knop begins with a double circular collar; the baluster part then flares out to a diameter of 8.2mm. Above the baluster are a further pair of collars. The knop then flares out into a sub-circular seal top, c. 12.6mm in diameter and flat on the upper side.
This type of spoon knop was common from the mid-16th to the mid-17th century. Moore (1999, 5) attributes t…
