Medieval cast copper-alloy vessel leg, c.1300-1500 AD, probably from a ewer (water jug). The leg has an elongated D-shaped cross-section with a rounded front and flat back. It has an old irregular break at the upper end. The oval foot projects forward and has a rounded end. It is 35.2mm tall, 23.3mm wide, 12.8mm thick; it weighs 38.06 grams. The foot would have been one of three on a complete vessel, which would have been used to hold water for hand-washing (Lewis 1987).

A corroded and abraded post-medieval cast copper-alloy vessel foot and part of the leg. The leg is D shaped in cross-section with a flat back and convex front; it has broken following an old break at a diagonal angle. It is decorated with five longitudinal ribs. There is a prominent transverse collar at the junction of leg and foot. The collar has moulded diagonal ribs giving a ropework/cable pattern. The flaring foot is also D-shaped in cross-section, also with raised ribs running down the front, but highly worn and abraded. Crudely made cast copper-alloy vessels were widely use…

A cast copper-alloy fragment: possibly a dish support from a late medieval/early post-medieval chafing dish. The object tapers to a point at one end. It has a trapezoidal cross-section and appears to have been broken away from another element at the shorter of the long edges of the attachment end. The artefact has corroded to a red/brown colour with patches of light-green corrosion product. It appears to be plain.

A copper-alloy fragment: probably the terminal of a handle from a medieval cooking vessel, probably a posnet. The handle has a low D-shaped cross-section, being flat on its upper surface and shallowly convex below. It terminates in an angled projection at about 135 degrees to the handle's underside, a projection that seems to be characteristic of posnets. Before this projection is a cross patty recessed into the upper surface of the handle. The object now has a mid-green colour with some surface loss; the break is old and patinated.

A post-medieval cast copper-alloy vessel leg. The leg is triangular with rounded corners in cross-section with a flat back and convex front. It is decorated with a prominent central longitudinal rib, flanked by a single low rib to each side. The terminal is merely squared off rather than ending in a foot; this is somewhat rounded through wear. The attachment end bears the curved interior of the vessel with very little surviving beyond the cross-section of the leg. The leg stands at an angle of sixty or more degrees to a flat surface.

A lower fragment from a cast copper-alloy medieval to post-medieval chafing dish drop handle. In plan, the handle frame would have been sub-trapezoidal with rounded corners, the frame is rectangular in cross-section. What survives is the lower part, other than one corner which is missing, with a pronouncedly incurved centre. The frame has a dark-green/grey colour; the breaks are old and patinated. A parallel can be found in illustrated in Allen (1984; fig. 192; ref. 165); it also conforms to Lewis's Type B1 (Lewis 1973, 61-64) given a 15th-/16th-century date.

A rim fragment of a medieval to post-medieval cast copper-alloy vessel, now of irregular quadrilateral form. The fragment appears to be the rim of a serving vessel, now with shallow curvature. The rim is thickened externally, with an external groove at the base of the thickened area. Below there is an external ridge or cord; this is echoed by a double incised line internally. The breaks are old but fairly straight, perhaps suggesting a relatively brittle alloy used. The object has a grey-green patina. Crudely made cast copper-alloy vessels were widely used from c.AD 1200-1700 fo…

A post-medieval cast copper-alloy vessel foot and part of the leg. The leg is triangular in cross-section with a flat back; it is broken off just above a transverse prominent collar with an old break. The foot is flared and plain. The fragment has a dark-grey patina where it survives. Crudely made cast copper-alloy vessels were widely used from c.1100-1800 for serving and cooking. Butler et al (2009, 4) suggest there were four main types of leg used. This is a type C which they suggest was already in use by the 16th century and was almost universal in the 17th.

A notably small post-medieval cast copper-alloy vessel foot and part of the leg. The leg is triangular in cross-section with rounded corners and with a flat back; it is broken off just above a transverse prominent collar with an old break. The foot is small, rounded and seemingly plain. The fragment has a dark-grey patina where it survives following corrosion. Crudely made cast copper-alloy vessels were widely used from c.1100-1800 for serving and cooking. Butler et al (2009, 4) suggest there were four main types of leg used. A small post-medieval cast copper-alloy vessel leg and abraded foot. The leg is trapezoidal in cross-section with rounded corners and with a flat back; the front surface is narrower than the back. The foot is very worn at its base, diagonally in cross-section; it is assumed that this is following truncation as it would be inconsistent with usual wear through use. Just above the break there appears to be a low transverse ridge on the front, above which three longitudinal ridges, those that flank the central ridge curving outwards. The leg is connected to part of the curved body of t…

A corroded and abraded cast copper-alloy foot from a later medieval to early post-medieval cooking vessel. The object is prominently splayed at the base in a simple, out-turned, pad-like foot of trapezoidal cross-section, now broken to one side with this part missing. The base is slightly concave. The front of the foot is decorated with a prominently moulded central rib: any further elaboration has been obscured by old damage. The break is irregular. The flat back and base make an obtuse angle of about 110 degrees. As noted, the object has become corroded post-deposition, and is large…

A post-medieval cast copper-alloy vessel foot and part of the leg. The leg is broadly triangular in cross-section with a flat back; it is broken off just above a transverse collar with an old break. A post-medieval cast copper-alloy vessel leg. The leg is triangular in cross-section with a flat back. The foot is significantly tapered, which may be the result of wear. It measures only 14.3mm wide at its tip. It is notably worn to both sides. The leg is decorated with five prominent longitudinal ribs, the central one the most prominent, flanked by a pair of lower ribs to each side. Retained at the top of the leg is the curved inner surface of the vessel itself, with worn edges at the breaks. The fragment has a dark-green patina where it survives with the inner surface dark grey, po…
