Cast copper alloy weight for a half Ryal (Rose Noble). The weight is circular and flat with a raised design on one side only. The design is of the king with sword and square topped shield standing in a ship with rectangular bow and stern and a rose on the side of the ship. It is 14.2mm in diameter, 3.2mm thick and weighs 3.55 grams, 54.8 grains.
A full weight half ryal would have weighed 60 grains (Withers and Withers 1995, 68) but weights were normally made to the legal minimum weight which was slightly less and can lose weight through corrosion processes, the edges of this example…

Copper-alloy open type thimble or 'sewing ring' of late medieval or early post-medieval date. The sides are splayed and the base is wider than the top. The ring has fairly regularly spaced stamped triangular pits arranged in three to four rows around the sides. There is no evidence of a makers mark but it is badly corroded. It is 21.9mm by 19.3mm at the base and 11.2mm high; it weighs 5.13 grams.
The splayed sides allow an easier fit on the finger and is also chronologically diagnostic to the late medieval or early post-medieval periods (Holmes 1988: 3). It is similar to Holmes (ib…

It is likely that simple forms like this were in use by c.1350 (Egan and Pritchard 1993:22, 82-3, cf no.332), and they continued into the 17th century.

The find consists of 3335 base silver coins of the second and third centuries AD. 165 of which are denarii (which had been the principle Roman denomination during the first two centuries of Roman Britain) and the rest are radiates, the denarius-multiple (probably a double denarius) first introduced in AD 215 and which began to take over as the main denomination in the course of the third century. A copper-alloy mount of post-medieval date. The mount is of flat elaborate quatrefoil form with lobes that protrude at the angles. A pair of integral pointed lugs curve broadly in the same direction on the lower surface. The upper surface is seemingly undecorated, though has a polished quality absent on the lower surface.
This method of attachment using integral lugs is characteristic of the 17th century. An example of this date, similar in form to this object, can be found illustrated in Read (2001, 34; ref. 278). The object has a general dark-green patina.

This example has also been bent slightly in profile.
The mount is an openwork quatrefoil in shape with two of the internal lobes joining, not having been fettled. On the outer edge of one petal is a rounded projecting knop, slightly truncated; and on the outer edge of …

A copper-alloy dagger guard (quillon) of late medieval date (c. 15th century). It consists of a broadly lozengiform copper alloy bar which expands at either end and widens in the centre to accommodate a rectangular hole (now blocked) - this would have taken the tang of the dagger. Extending to one side and from either end of the main bar, are two joined arches (resembling an inverted number three). The object is plain but corroded. Where it survives the patina is grey in colour; the underlying metal is red/brown. The dagger guard is very similar to refs. 628 and 629, illustrated…

Object type: CLOTH SEAL
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Somerset
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A complete two-part lead-alloy cloth seal, the two discs and the connecting rivet intact along with the connecting tab. The central rivet and front disc were stamped with a 'privy' or 'merchant's' mark. The mark has the letters ?P [...] with a knot design above and below within a line border. On the reverse is a are three incuse stamped capital letters arranged in an inverted triangle: V D // I.
This was probably a cloth seal used by a weaver, dyer or searcher. The use of a privy mark suggests a 16th to 18th century date; many with incuse stamps are dated to the 17th century.
