Object type: BUCKLE
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Somerset
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Medieval buckle with elaborate openwork plate of heavily tinned copper alloy (c. 13th century AD). The frame is rectangular with a protruding lip at the centre of its outer edge with a groove to act as a pin rest. The pin itself is looped in situ around the frame but has been significantly truncated as a result of old damage. The plate is formed of a single thick sheet folded round on itself at the frame end. The lower fold is narrow compared to the upper, and far shorter, just long enough to incorporate the notched cut out for the pin while retaining integrity. The upper part of the …

Object type: UNIDENTIFIED OBJECT
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Somerset
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A cuboid terminal with integral rod of circular cross-section emerging from the centre of one face. The cuboid 'head' has rounded corners. The rod has been truncated at bent to one side at its current tip. The piece is corroded and the colour of the corrosion product suggests a post-medieval date, although an earlier one ought not to be ruled out. It is uncertain what the function was of this object. It measures 30.8mm long (16.8mm excluding the rod) by 17.2mm wide by 17.9mm thick; it weighs 34.13g.

Object type: PALSTAVE
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Somerset
Workflow stage: Published Find published
Middle Bronze Age cast copper-alloy palstave (axehead) of unlooped type .The palstave is corroded, with some losses at its extremities. The septum is thinner than the blade suggesting that this is a palstave rather than an earlier flanged axe (Schmidt and Burgess 1981, 115). The flanges gradually widen from the butt to the stop, creating a triangular shape in profile. The stop is angled forwards slightly at its centre. The blade is rectangular in cross-section with shallowly curved sides that widen gradually towards the cutting edge before curving out more approaching the cuttin…

Treasure case 2013 T179: Acquired by the Museum of Somerset. For full catalogue and details of the excavation please contact the Somerset FLO. The find consists of 3335 base silver coins of the second and third centuries AD. 165 of which are denarii (which had been the principle Roman denomination during the first two centuries of Roman Britain) and the rest are radiates, the denarius-multiple (probably a double denarius) first introduced in AD 215 and which began to take over as the main denomination in the course of the third century.
