A corroded cast copper-alloy double-looped buckle frame of post-medieval date (c. AD 1500-1650), incomplete in so far as it is missing its pin. The loops are of pointed oval form; they incurve towards the pin bar. The pin bar itself is narrowed and terminates in a small pointed knop at each end. The points are central triangular protrusions on the outer edges; one features a transverse groove which would have acted as a pin rest. The frame is bevelled both externally and internally on its upper surface; the former is more gradual. The pin bar is therefore trapezoidal in cross-sect…

A cast copper-alloy double-looped buckle of post-medieval date, incomplete only in so far as the iron pin is highly corroded with only its loop surviving. The broadly D-shaped loops are bevelled externally on their upper surface; bevelling echoed internally on the lower. In the centre of each outer edge is a protruding squat fleur de lis. The lis are defined by an transversly incised line across their base, and circular punches in their side fleurs; there is an incised line along the lobelike central fleur. The pin bar features small lobes at each end; as noted, the loop of the iron p…

A cast copper-alloy pin now independent of its frame, probably from a medieval annular buckle. It is solidly cast, with a cross-section in the shape of a rectangle with rounded corners. The oval loop is broken such that around just over half of it survives. There is a rectangular ridge at the junction of the loop and the shaft. This is decorated with four transverse incisions, creating five ridges. The pin tapers slightly to a rounded tip. The object now a dark-brown colour with much corrosion and pitting. The loop has been bent to one side, the tip slighly to the other. The size of …

A post-medieval copper-alloy buckle with separate pin and stud chape surviving largely intact. The frame of the buckle is symmetrical, comprising two roughly 'D-shaped' sides which curve downwards in profile either side of the axis bar. At the centre of the two horizontal sides of the frame there are two opposing, 'bow-shaped' mouldings. At the centre of each of the two curved outer ends is a moulding with engraved, opposing oblique lines, which at one end acts as a pin rest with central groove. The central axis bar is contained within two opposing holes in the frame, above which thre…

A cast copper-alloy single-looped buckle of post-medieval date, incomplete in so far as it is missing its pin. The buckle is square with an elaborate, expanded outer edge formed of an oval on ovoid knop. This latter is divided from the rest of the frame by a thin transverse ridge. The frame is decorated by transverse grooves on the internal edges of the inner and outer edges. The sides are decorated with similar grooves externally. The upper surface is also slightly bevelled externally and internally at the edges. The lower surface is virtually flat and plain. The pin bar is not d…

A post-medieval cast copper-alloy double-looped buckle, incomplete in so far as it is missing its pin. The frame is formed of two oval loops with a central narrowed bar of trapezoidal cross-section. The frame is 'D' shaped in section with a flat reverse and rounded front. There are projecting circular knops at the outer corners of the frame on both loops and rounded knops at the top and bottom of the bar. The pin is missing. It measures 33.9 mm long, 20.6 mm wide and 3.1 mm thick. It weighs 4.73 g. A similar buckle is illustrated in Whitehead (2003; 63) number 382 which he dates to…

An broken and incomplete cast copper-alloy double-looped buckle frame of early post-medieval date. The frame was formed of two conjoined ovals such that the sides incurve slightly; one of the loops has been lost due to old damage at its junction with the pin bar. The frame is shallowly bevelled externally on the upper surface; the lower surface is flat. The pin bar has a trapezoidal cross-section. It is extended at each end in a rounded knop. The pin is missing. The buckle frame has corroded to a variable red/brown colour with some patches of dark-green patina surviving in a few places.

An incomplete medieval cast copper-alloy single looped buckle, missing both pin bar and pin. The frame is oval and angled with a possible central pin rest. The pin bar has been lost in its entireity, with the side of the buckle twisted up at one end where the pin bar would have emerged; it is assumed that the pin bar would have been off set and narrowed. The outer edge is expanded both in width and thickness. The frame has a variable mid-green colour and would appear to be plain.

An incomplete cast copper-alloy post-medieval double-looped buckle frame, missing most of one of its loops as well as its pin. The pin bar extends beyond the edges in rounded lobes. The reverse and upper surfaces are flat, and the frame bevelled internally and externally on the upper surface. This latter is decorated on each outer edge by a rosette probably with three outer petals and ?two inner. A corroded and incomplete cast copper-alloy post-medieval plain double-looped buckle frame. The frame is missing one of its loops after an old break at the pin bar; only vestiges of the loop survive. The surviving loop is trapezoidal. There is a small knopped protrusion at each end of the pin bar. The pin is missing, but traces of orange/brown corrosion product at the pin bar and the centre of the outer edge suggest that it would have been made of iron. The frame is D-shaped in plan, and broadly rectangular in cross-section with rounded corners, but is angled. At both ends of the frame are animal heads that grip the stump of the broken narrowed pin-bar that is oval in cross-section. The animal heads are delineated by transverse, slightly obliquely set collars moulded in low relief.
