Object type: BUCKLE
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Somerset
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A post-medieval cast copper-alloy double-looped buckle, incomplete in so far as it is missing its pin. The frame is formed of two oval loops with a central narrowed strap bar of trapezoidal cross-section. Possible traces of iron corrosion product at the strap bar suggest that the pin was made of iron. The frame is 'D' shaped in section with a flat back and rounded front. There are projecting circular knops at the outer corners of the frame on both loops and rounded knops at the top and bottom of the strap bar. The pin is missing. It measures 35.4mm long, 24.2mm wide and 2.6mm thick. I…

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A cast copper-alloy stirrup-strap mount of late early-medieval to medieval date (c. late 11th century AD). This tapering pear-shaped mount can be classified as a Williams Class A, Type 10A mount, based on its decoration in the English Urnes style. It is solid, of a hollow convex form with a common right angle flange at its base (Type A, Williams 1997, 25), solid and offset at the sides. The base of the mount's front has been perforated twice, with the two iron rivets surviving corroded in situ. Opposite the base is the rounded apex loop which similarly retains an iron rivet corroded…

County: Somerset
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A damaged and incomplete copper-alloy post-medieval buckle plate. The plate was formed of one copper-alloy sheet, cut and bent over on itself. It is broken in half, at the point where it would have looped round the buckle frame. From the broken point it continues with plain rectangular tabs on either side before narrowing to a waist of 7.7mm. The squared off terminal is flared out at 11.9mm wide. In addition to this hole at the terminal there is another hole central with the widest point; neither rivet survives. No decoration is visible on either surface. The metal is a general…

A damaged and incomplete cast copper-alloy mount, possibly a propeller shaped belt stiffener of late Roman date. The mount consists of a central circular element (diameter 16.4mm) flanked to one side by a sub-rectangular tab. There is a transverse break at the circumference of the roundel where a possible equivalent tab might have emerged. The roundel is decorated with longitudinal ridges, those towards the edge curved to follow its shape. The grooves between are decorated with incised rocker arm. The tab begins with a transverse ridge, beyond which the main field has two longitu…

Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A post-medieval cast copper-alloy (latten) spoon bowl, detached from the stem following old damage. The bowl is sub-oval with a wider, more squared off end near the stem (the shoulders) and fairly straight sides. There is a maker's mark of I spoon R?, punched on the front of the bowl near the stem. This latter has been broken at its junction with the bowl. There are extensive traces of a white metal coating on the bowl's interior. The bowl shape is consistent with a latten trifid spoon in latten dated c. 1680 by Homer (1975, 46; ref. f), thought it is similar to the slightly earli…

Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL

A fragment of a post-medieval copper-alloy pedestal type seal matrix with an oval sectioned handle, now mostly missing. The face of the seal is oval with a basic incised border around a ?weeping eye, the tears rendered by incised wavy lines below. The handle is broken just above the back of the seal face but would probably have had a suspension loop at the end; alternatively this may have travelled towards the centre of a multi-die matrix. Read (1995, 152) illustrates post-medieval seal matrices which he dates to the 17th century.
