Post-medieval cast copper-alloy double-loop buckle frame with rectangular loops, with the loop of the broken pin in situ around the pin bar. The pin has been broken just beyond the loop. The loops are trapezoidal in cross section. The outer edges of both loops are straight other than a central rectangular projecting lobe. There is an incised line running down the centre of each projection acting as a pin rest. There are smaller projecting knops at the ends of the narrowed strap bar. The frame is 40.5mm long, 25.3mm wide and 3.7mm thick; it weighs 9.08g. Whitehead (2003: 79) illustra…

Medieval - post-medieval cast copper-alloy single loop buckle frame, missing its pin. The loop is oval with flattened edge acting as the pin/strap bar. The loop is D shaped in section with a flat back. All the way around the front are deeply incised, regular spaced diagonal lines creating a crude ropework. The frame is 30.1mm long and 28.3mm wide; it weighs 5.71 grams. A similar frame is illustrated by Whitehead (2003, 25), no.122 which he dates to c.1450-1550 AD

A copper-alloy late medieval annular buckle frame with central strap bar. The outer face of one side is decorated with incised grooves, forming lobes in between. The other loop has two constrictions on the outer edge, with a lobe at either side, the area between containing multiple transverse grooves. The front is bevelled internally and externally while the back is flat. The frame measures 31.2mm long, 27.3mm wide and 3.2mm; it weighs 7.24 grams. A similar buckle is illustrated by Whitehead (2003, 46), no.266, and is dated to c.AD 1400-1500.

Medieval or post-medieval plain cast copper-alloy double-loop buckle frame. The frame has two oval loops with bevelled outer and inner sides on the front; the back appears flat. The strap bar is narrowed with a triangular cross-section. The pin is missing but dark orange corrosion product at the pin bar shows that it would have been of iron. It is 24.9mm long, 20.3mm wide and 2.2mm thick, it weighs 3.0 grams. It is likely that simple forms like this were in use by c.1350 (Egan and Pritchard 1993:22, 82-3, cf no.332), and they continued into the 17th century.

Medieval cast copper-alloy buckle frame missing its plate and pin. The frame is oval with an offset and narrowed strap bar and offset outer edge recessed in the centre to take a sheet roller which survives in place. The outer edge has knops flanking the recessed centre. The upper and lower sides have a convex outer face. The frame is 19.5mm long, 4.75mm thick and 24.05mm wide and weighs 4.53 grams. Egan (2007, 95) illustrates a very similar example, no.590. He suggests (ibid:86) this type (Meols Type 11) dates to the medieval period (c.1250-1400 AD).

Post-medieval cast copper-alloy single-loop (probably) sub-rectangular buckle frame with decorated outer edge. The frame is flat on its lower surface and moulded externally on the upper. The pin bar is slightly narrowed. At the corners of the outer edge are lobed knops that protrude diagonally. Between them is cusping around a central triangle which bears a scored pin rest centrally. There are four small lateral knops and the sides just in from the pin bar and outer edge, respectively. The pin is missing, although there is a hint of iron corrosion product at the centre of the pin …

A post-medieval double-looped buckle dating to c. 1660-1720 AD. The frame is sub-trapezoidal with concave notched ends each with two conjoined circular openwork apertures. The sides are pronouncedly concave with pointed and grooved knops at the junction with the apertures. The sides are thickened at the pin bar.. The latter appears integral to the frame, though narrowed and recessed. Patches of iron corrosion product are attached to it on both surfaces. The front of the buckle is moulded while the back is flat. It is curved in profile probably as a result of its use as a shoe or …

A damaged and incomplete copper-alloy post-medieval buckle plate. The plate was formed of one copper-alloy sheet, cut and bent over on itself. It is broken in half, at the point where it would have looped round the buckle frame. From the broken point it continues with plain rectangular tabs on either side before narrowing to a waist of 7.7mm. The squared off terminal is flared out at 11.9mm wide. In addition to this hole at the terminal there is another hole central with the widest point; neither rivet survives. No decoration is visible on either surface. The metal is a general…

A cast copper-alloy post-medieval double-looped buckle frame, incomplete in as much it is missing its pin. The pin bar extends beyond the edges in squared off lobes. The reverse and upper surfaces are flat, and the frame bevelled internally and externally on the upper surface. This latter is decorated on each outer edge by a six-petalled rosette with three outer petals and three inner. Traces of orange corrosion product around the pin bar's centre and one of the outer edge suggest that it was made of iron. The buckle is a red/brown colour but is sometimes covered in a …

A small cast copper-alloy double-looped buckle frame of early post-medieval date, incomplete in so far as it is missing its pin. The frame is formed of two conjoined ovals such that the sides incurve. The frame is shallowly bevelled externally on the upper surface; the lower surface is bevelling internally accordingly. The pin bar has a trapezoidal cross-section. It is raised slightly at each end in a subtle knop. The buckle frame has corroded to a variable mid-green colour. In profile the buckle has been bent as a result of old damage.

A corroded cast copper-alloy double-looped buckle frame of post-medieval date (c. AD 1500-1650), incomplete in so far as it is missing its pin. The loops are of pointed oval form; they incurve towards the pin bar. The pin bar itself is narrowed and terminates in a small pointed knop at each end. The points are central triangular protrusions on the outer edges; one features a transverse groove which would have acted as a pin rest. The frame is bevelled both externally and internally on its upper surface; the former is more gradual. The pin bar is therefore trapezoidal in cross-sect…

A post-medieval copper-alloy buckle with separate pin and stud chape surviving largely intact. The frame of the buckle is symmetrical, comprising two roughly 'D-shaped' sides which curve downwards in profile either side of the axis bar. At the centre of the two horizontal sides of the frame there are two opposing, 'bow-shaped' mouldings. At the centre of each of the two curved outer ends is a moulding with engraved, opposing oblique lines, which at one end acts as a pin rest with central groove. The central axis bar is contained within two opposing holes in the frame, above which thre…

An incomplete medieval cast copper-alloy single looped buckle, missing both pin bar and pin. The frame is oval and angled with a possible central pin rest. The pin bar has been lost in its entireity, with the side of the buckle twisted up at one end where the pin bar would have emerged; it is assumed that the pin bar would have been off set and narrowed. The outer edge is expanded both in width and thickness. The frame has a variable mid-green colour and would appear to be plain.
