The value of 18 shillings indicated was equivalent to the 'half joe'/2 escudos coin (Withers & Withers 1995, 55). Both faces are marked with a small S above a large 18 above a small 4 . 14 1/2, all within a laurel wreath. This indicates a weight equivalent to that of 18 shillings. It consists of a broadly lozengiform copper alloy bar which expands at either end and widens in the centre to accommodate a rectangular hole (now blocked) - this would have taken the tang of the dagger.
