Object type: DRESS HOOK
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Somerset
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A damaged and incomplete copper-alloy dress hook dating to the post-medieval period, missing its hook. The object has been cast in one piece with an openwork, moulded upper surface; the lower surface is flat. The hook has been lost in its entirety following old damage. The plate is sub-circular, with a rectangular bar attached to it at two large circular pellets. The aperture between the bar and the top of the plate would have formed the loop. The plate has a central pellets from which cross arms emerge, the lateral pair protruding beyond the plate's edges. In each quarter created by…

Object type: FIGURINE
Broad period: IRON AGE
County: Somerset
Workflow stage: Published
A cast copper-alloy fragment moulded in the round in the form of a bovine head, possibly of Late Iron Age/early Roman date. The creature has a snout that curves upwards at the tip, broadly circular in cross-section, and with a triangular flat area on the tip's upper surface to represent a nose. The sides of the upper surface behind this are bevelled. Behind this are oval eyes moulded in low relief. At right angles to the back of the snout is a neck of sub-triangular cross-section. This has been truncated below the snout as a result of old damage. At the top, behind the eyes, are two a…

The striking surface is also convex curved giving rounded ends to the sides of the hammer. There is a wide, plain thickened collar at the socket end of the hammer adjacent to the rim; the corners of this are rounded giving a sub-square outer edge to the rim. There is no clear evidence for a loop, although on side is corroded and could potential…

Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Somerset
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A copper-alloy strap-fitting of medieval or post-medieval date. The artefact consists of two roughly parallel sub-rectangular plates of equal form, separated from each other by a central gap and joined by a basal loop. The now-missing strap would have fitted between the plates, where it would have been held in place by two rivets, both missing. The plates expand gradually and slightly towards the attachment end which is incurved. There are some small losses at this end. One pair of rivet holes is at this end, the other above the loop. The basal loop, which has a convex upper surface, …
