A post-medieval cast copper-alloy double-looped buckle, incomplete in so far as it is missing its pin. The frame is formed of two oval loops with a central narrowed strap bar of trapezoidal cross-section. Possible traces of iron corrosion product at the strap bar suggest that the pin was made of iron. The frame is 'D' shaped in section with a flat back and rounded front. There are projecting circular knops at the outer corners of the frame on both loops and rounded knops at the top and bottom of the strap bar. The pin is missing. It measures 35.4mm long, 24.2mm wide and 2.6mm thick. I…

A damaged and incomplete copper-alloy post-medieval buckle plate. The plate was formed of one copper-alloy sheet, cut and bent over on itself. It is broken in half, at the point where it would have looped round the buckle frame. From the broken point it continues with plain rectangular tabs on either side before narrowing to a waist of 7.7mm. The squared off terminal is flared out at 11.9mm wide. In addition to this hole at the terminal there is another hole central with the widest point; neither rivet survives. No decoration is visible on either surface. The metal is a general…

A copper-alloy late medieval annular buckle frame with central strap bar. The outer face of one side is decorated with incised grooves, forming lobes in between. The other loop has two constrictions on the outer edge, with a lobe at either side, the area between containing multiple transverse grooves. The front is bevelled internally and externally while the back is flat. The frame measures 31.2mm long, 27.3mm wide and 3.2mm; it weighs 7.24 grams. A similar buckle is illustrated by Whitehead (2003, 46), no.266, and is dated to c.AD 1400-1500.

Medieval or post-medieval plain cast copper-alloy double-loop buckle frame. The frame has two oval loops with bevelled outer and inner sides on the front; the back appears flat. The strap bar is narrowed with a triangular cross-section. The pin is missing but dark orange corrosion product at the pin bar shows that it would have been of iron. It is 24.9mm long, 20.3mm wide and 2.2mm thick, it weighs 3.0 grams. It is likely that simple forms like this were in use by c.1350 (Egan and Pritchard 1993:22, 82-3, cf no.332), and they continued into the 17th century.

Medieval cast copper-alloy buckle frame missing its plate and pin. The frame is oval with an offset and narrowed strap bar and offset outer edge recessed in the centre to take a sheet roller which survives in place. The outer edge has knops flanking the recessed centre. The upper and lower sides have a convex outer face. The frame is 19.5mm long, 4.75mm thick and 24.05mm wide and weighs 4.53 grams. Egan (2007, 95) illustrates a very similar example, no.590. He suggests (ibid:86) this type (Meols Type 11) dates to the medieval period (c.1250-1400 AD).

Medieval cast copper-alloy buckle frame. The frame is broadly 'D' shaped in plan, with a protruding pointed lip for the pin in the centre of the outer edge. The lip seems to have a notched centre for the pin to rest in formed by an incised line. The frame is broadly D-shaped in section with a flattened inner side. The strap bar is slightly offset and recessed. The pin is missing. The buckle measures 17.3mm long, 20.9mm wide and 3.3mm thick; it weighs 1.89g. Similar buckles are illustrated in Egan (2007:91) e.g. no.496-497. These examples are categorised as a Meols type 4 and it is …

A damaged and incomplete medieval buckle with integral hollow box plate cast in copper alloy (15th century AD). The frame is almost entirely missing apart from a very small part of the side at the junction. At the junction of frame and plate is an oval perforation. Retained in place is a long wire pin of circular cross-section, its tip bent to one side. It has corroded to a more red colour than the box plate and was of a different alloy. A thin, waisted element connects the frame and the trapezoidal plate. The box plate is hollow to accommodate the strap which was held in place by a p…

A medieval cast copper-alloy single-looped buckle, missing its pin. The outer edge is widened and thickened, and tapers in thickness to the sides. It has slight lateral knops. There are three incised transverse grooves on the front of the outer edge in the centre, with further nicks to help define the knops. The top and bottom sides are slightly bowed in plan. The pin bar is very slightly narrowed and recessed. At the centre of its back is a prominent notch around which the pin would have looped. The frame is 16.2mm long, 13.8mm wide and 3.8mm (max.) thick, and 2.13g in weight. Gri…

A post-medieval double-looped buckle dating to c. 1660-1720 AD. The frame is sub-trapezoidal with concave notched ends each with two conjoined circular openwork apertures. The sides are pronouncedly concave with pointed and grooved knops at the junction with the apertures. The sides are thickened at the pin bar.. The latter appears integral to the frame, though narrowed and recessed. Patches of iron corrosion product are attached to it on both surfaces. The front of the buckle is moulded while the back is flat. It is curved in profile probably as a result of its use as a shoe or …

A post-medieval copper-alloy buckle with separate pin and stud chape surviving largely intact. The frame of the buckle is symmetrical, comprising two roughly 'D-shaped' sides which curve downwards in profile either side of the axis bar. At the centre of the two horizontal sides of the frame there are two opposing, 'bow-shaped' mouldings. At the centre of each of the two curved outer ends is a moulding with engraved, opposing oblique lines, which at one end acts as a pin rest with central groove. The central axis bar is contained within two opposing holes in the frame, above which thre…

An incomplete medieval cast copper-alloy single looped buckle, missing both pin bar and pin. The frame is oval and angled with a possible central pin rest. The pin bar has been lost in its entireity, with the side of the buckle twisted up at one end where the pin bar would have emerged; it is assumed that the pin bar would have been off set and narrowed. The outer edge is expanded both in width and thickness. The frame has a variable mid-green colour and would appear to be plain.

A distorted and incomplete medieval copper-alloy buckle frame having lost its pin bar as a result of old damage. The frame is D-shaped in plan, and broadly rectangular in cross-section with rounded corners, but is angled. At both ends of the frame are animal heads that grip the stump of the broken narrowed pin-bar that is oval in cross-section. The animal heads are delineated by transverse, slightly obliquely set collars moulded in low relief. The heads are shown more at three quarters view to account for the fact that the back of the frame would not generally be seen. They are decora…

A post-medieval cast copper-alloy double-looped buckle frame, incomplete insofar as it is missing a pin. The buckle is broadly oval; with broadly straight upper and lower edges and convex curved ends. There is a narrowed integral central strap bar with lobed knops at either end. These are flanked by slightly concave curved sections of the upper and lower sides. Beyond this, on the outer ends of each side, is an outward projecting knop; some of these are abraded. The ends are thickened in the centre coming to a point on the inner side. Whitehead (2003, 70) illustrates two similar ex…

A medieval or post-medieval cast copper-alloy double-looped buckle frame. The frame has two oval loops which incurve towards the pin bar. They are bevelled externally on their upper surface thus giving them a triangular cross-section. The pin bar is trapezoidal in cross-section. The pin is formed of a strip of rectangular cross-section and is looped loosely around the pin bar. It tapers to a gradual point at the tip which has been bent upwards following old damage. One of the loops has been bent upwards in relation to the other, slightly twisted, following old damage. The buckle has c…

An incomplete cast copper-alloy post-medieval double-looped buckle frame. The frame was formed of a pair of oval loops with moulded floral decoration on their edges; one of the loops has been lost beyond the mouldings at each end of the pin bar as a result of old damage. There is a trilobed moulding at each end of the pin bar. This latter is triangular in cross-section and has lost its pin. The surviving loop has a protruding trilobed moulding on its outer edge.
