Medieval or post-medieval plain cast copper-alloy double-loop buckle frame. The frame has two oval loops with bevelled outer and inner sides on the front; the back appears flat. The strap bar is narrowed with a triangular cross-section. The pin is missing but dark orange corrosion product at the pin bar shows that it would have been of iron. It is 24.9mm long, 20.3mm wide and 2.2mm thick, it weighs 3.0 grams.
It is likely that simple forms like this were in use by c.1350 (Egan and Pritchard 1993:22, 82-3, cf no.332), and they continued into the 17th century.

Medieval cast copper-alloy buckle frame missing its plate and pin. The frame is oval with an offset and narrowed strap bar and offset outer edge recessed in the centre to take a sheet roller which survives in place. The outer edge has knops flanking the recessed centre. The upper and lower sides have a convex outer face. The frame is 19.5mm long, 4.75mm thick and 24.05mm wide and weighs 4.53 grams.
Egan (2007, 95) illustrates a very similar example, no.590. He suggests (ibid:86) this type (Meols Type 11) dates to the medieval period (c.1250-1400 AD).

Medieval cast copper-alloy buckle frame. The frame is broadly 'D' shaped in plan, with a protruding pointed lip for the pin in the centre of the outer edge. The lip seems to have a notched centre for the pin to rest in formed by an incised line. The frame is broadly D-shaped in section with a flattened inner side. The strap bar is slightly offset and recessed. The pin is missing. The buckle measures 17.3mm long, 20.9mm wide and 3.3mm thick; it weighs 1.89g.
Similar buckles are illustrated in Egan (2007:91) e.g. no.496-497. These examples are categorised as a Meols type 4 and it is suggested they date from the late 14th century (ibid:88).

Medieval cast copper-alloy vessel leg, c.1300-1500 AD, probably from a ewer (water jug). The leg has an elongated D-shaped cross-section with a rounded front and flat back. It has an old irregular break at the upper end. The oval foot projects forward and has a rounded end. It is 35.2mm tall, 23.3mm wide, 12.8mm thick; it weighs 38.06 grams.
The foot would have been one of three on a complete vessel, which would have been used to hold water for hand-washing (Lewis 1987).

Medieval cast copper-alloy pedestal type seal matrix. The matrix has a circular face with a central design of a quatrefoil with frond like leaves. The impersonal legend around the design reads * LEL AMI AVET (you have a loyal friend). The legend starts with a star. The matrix has a pedestal type handle rising from the face in six facets, narrowing as it rises to a waist from which it expands out slightly before ending in a recessed, crude trefoil at the top, above a double collar.

Copper-alloy mount of elaborate openwork with a broken hook at one end, dating to the post-medieval period. The object is largely pointed oval in plan, extending at one end into a curved hook with broken tip. At the other end is a lozengiform knop with small trefoil tip. The centre of the mount is shaped by four trefoil shaped perforations that create an internal web that is complicated, but has longitudinal symmetry. Where the four central ribs meet the edge of the mount there are small bifid protrusions. The hook begins with a pair of addorsed crescentic mouldings. Above these latter the mount is perforated for a rivet that survives in situ, though bent on the back face. A second attachment rivet is located in the centre of the lozengiform knop at the other end. The rear face is flat and plain; the front is bevelled internally and externally with the upper surface. The object is 60.4mm long, 21.2mm wide and 2.4mm thick, going up to 6.3mm at the hook; it weighs 7.54 grams.

A damaged and incomplete medieval buckle with integral hollow box plate cast in copper alloy (15th century AD). The frame is almost entirely missing apart from a very small part of the side at the junction. At the junction of frame and plate is an oval perforation. Retained in place is a long wire pin of circular cross-section, its tip bent to one side. It has corroded to a more red colour than the box plate and was of a different alloy. A thin, waisted element connects the frame and the trapezoidal plate. The box plate is hollow to accommodate the strap which was held in place by a pair of rivets at the attachment end (now missing). On its upper surface the plate is decorated with crude incised lettering, possibly the 'IhS' monogram within a border. The plate has a dark-grey colour with patches of light-green corrosion product and evidence of tinning on the upper surface. It measures 35.1mm long by 27.3mm wide by 6.6mm thick; it weighs 23.2g.
The box end and elongated pin suggests it may be from a lyre shaped buckle similar to Ward-Perkin (1967, p. 270) A2625. Using evidence from contemporary brasses, Ward-Perkins suggested that this type should be dated to c. 1390-1410 (p. 268). However, a number of excavated examples from London suggest that the type continued in use slightly longer (Egan 1991, pp. 102-106). On the continant they are known from c.1375 (Fingerlin 1971:218).

Medieval buckle with elaborate openwork plate of heavily tinned copper alloy (c. 13th century AD). The frame is rectangular with a protruding lip at the centre of its outer edge with a groove to act as a pin rest. The pin itself is looped in situ around the frame but has been significantly truncated as a result of old damage. The plate is formed of a single thick sheet folded round on itself at the frame end. The lower fold is narrow compared to the upper, and far shorter, just long enough to incorporate the notched cut out for the pin while retaining integrity. The upper part of the fold is recessed for the frame at the fold; its main part is wider and broadly square. At the attachment end two long projections emerge from just within the side. One of these projecting bars has been broken around halfway along its length. The other is broadly rectangular, tapering slightly before an expanded circular terminal, perforated for a rivet that is now missing. The main plate is openwork, with four rectangular longitudinal cut outs at the frame end, beyond each a circular cut out at the attachment end. Much of the tinning survives covering the buckle. It measures 56.9mm long by 24.3mm wide; it weighs 14.01g. See NLM-53B266 on this database for a similar buckle.

A cuboid terminal with integral rod of circular cross-section emerging from the centre of one face. The cuboid 'head' has rounded corners. The rod has been truncated at bent to one side at its current tip. The piece is corroded and the colour of the corrosion product suggests a post-medieval date, although an earlier one ought not to be ruled out. It is uncertain what the function was of this object. It measures 30.8mm long (16.8mm excluding the rod) by 17.2mm wide by 17.9mm thick; it weighs 34.13g.

Middle Bronze Age cast copper-alloy palstave (axehead) of unlooped type .The palstave is corroded, with some losses at its extremities. The septum is thinner than the blade suggesting that this is a palstave rather than an earlier flanged axe (Schmidt and Burgess 1981, 115). The flanges gradually widen from the butt to the stop, creating a triangular shape in profile. The stop is angled forwards slightly at its centre.
The blade is rectangular in cross-section with shallowly curved sides that widen gradually towards the cutting edge before curving out more approaching the cutting edge. The blade thins gradually from the stop to the cutting edge. There appears to be a double edge bevel.
The palstave appears plain and has suffered losses at the butt and significantly on one side of the flanges and at one corner of the cutting edge, with metal showing through the patina at this latter. The palstave dates in general to the Middle Bronze Age, most likely within the Taunton or possibly Penard MW assemblages, that is c. 1400-1150BC.. It measures 147.4mm long by 51.4mm wide by 23.5mm thick; it weighs over 100g.
