Cast copper alloy weight for a half Ryal (Rose Noble). The weight is circular and flat with a raised design on one side only. The design is of the king with sword and square topped shield standing in a ship with rectangular bow and stern and a rose on the side of the ship. It is 14.2mm in diameter, 3.2mm thick and weighs 3.55 grams, 54.8 grains. A full weight half ryal would have weighed 60 grains (Withers and Withers 1995, 68) but weights were normally made to the legal minimum weight which was slightly less and can lose weight through corrosion processes, the edges of this example…

Loop/eye part of a two part cast copper alloy dress fastener of Post-Medieval, 17th century date (AD 1600-1700). The fastener is flat and largely pointed oval in plan with an integral rectangular loop at one end of the main plate and a grooved ornamental knop at the other, reminiscent of a scallop shell. Copper-alloy open type thimble or 'sewing ring' of late medieval or early post-medieval date. The sides are splayed and the base is wider than the top. The ring has fairly regularly spaced stamped triangular pits arranged in three to four rows around the sides. There is no evidence of a makers mark but it is badly corroded. It is 21.9mm by 19.3mm at the base and 11.2mm high; it weighs 5.13 grams. Post-medieval cast copper-alloy double-loop buckle frame with rectangular loops, with the loop of the broken pin in situ around the pin bar. The pin has been broken just beyond the loop. The loops are trapezoidal in cross section. The outer edges of both loops are straight other than a central rectangular projecting lobe. A medieval sheet copper-alloy domed thimble with sloping sides, now squashed. There are multiple circular drilled or punched pits in slightly irregular concentric circles on the sides and top. Just above the base, below the pits, is an incised line. The thimble is 25.15mm long and 17.2mm wide in its squashed state; it weighs 5.15g, but this weight included mud. The thimble is probably late medieval in date (AD 1400-1500). It was probably used for light duty sewing (Egan 1998, 265).

Medieval - post-medieval cast copper-alloy single loop buckle frame, missing its pin. The loop is oval with flattened edge acting as the pin/strap bar. The loop is D shaped in section with a flat back. All the way around the front are deeply incised, regular spaced diagonal lines creating a crude ropework. The frame is 30.1mm long and 28.3mm wide; it weighs 5.71 grams. A similar frame is illustrated by Whitehead (2003, 25), no.122 which he dates to c.1450-1550 AD

A copper-alloy late medieval annular buckle frame with central strap bar. The outer face of one side is decorated with incised grooves, forming lobes in between. The other loop has two constrictions on the outer edge, with a lobe at either side, the area between containing multiple transverse grooves. The front is bevelled internally and externally while the back is flat. The frame measures 31.2mm long, 27.3mm wide and 3.2mm; it weighs 7.24 grams. A similar buckle is illustrated by Whitehead (2003, 46), no.266, and is dated to c.AD 1400-1500.

Medieval cast copper-alloy impersonal seal matrix. The matrix has a pointed oval face with a central design of a lion rampant standing right within a line border encircled by the legend. The legend appears to read * PROTA[...]R[...]. The legend starts with a star. The matrix has a central ridge running up most of the back which would have terminates in a loop; this last has been lost following an old break. This object 19.75mm long by 14.7mm wide and 3.3mm thick; a weight was not captured on the day.

Medieval or post-medieval plain cast copper-alloy double-loop buckle frame. The frame has two oval loops with bevelled outer and inner sides on the front; the back appears flat. The strap bar is narrowed with a triangular cross-section. The pin is missing but dark orange corrosion product at the pin bar shows that it would have been of iron. It is 24.9mm long, 20.3mm wide and 2.2mm thick, it weighs 3.0 grams. It is likely that simple forms like this were in use by c.1350 (Egan and Pritchard 1993:22, 82-3, cf no.332), and they continued into the 17th century.
