Object type: BUCKLE
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Somerset
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A post-medieval cast copper-alloy double-looped buckle, incomplete in so far as it is missing its pin. The frame is formed of two oval loops with a central narrowed strap bar of trapezoidal cross-section. Possible traces of iron corrosion product at the strap bar suggest that the pin was made of iron. The frame is 'D' shaped in section with a flat back and rounded front. There are projecting circular knops at the outer corners of the frame on both loops and rounded knops at the top and bottom of the strap bar. The pin is missing. It measures 35.4mm long, 24.2mm wide and 2.6mm thick. I…

Object type: BUCKLE
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Somerset
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A damaged and incomplete copper-alloy post-medieval buckle plate. The plate was formed of one copper-alloy sheet, cut and bent over on itself. It is broken in half, at the point where it would have looped round the buckle frame. From the broken point it continues with plain rectangular tabs on either side before narrowing to a waist of 7.7mm. The squared off terminal is flared out at 11.9mm wide. In addition to this hole at the terminal there is another hole central with the widest point; neither rivet survives. No decoration is visible on either surface. The metal is a general…

Object type: SPOON
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Somerset
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A post-medieval cast copper-alloy (latten) spoon bowl, detached from the stem following old damage. The bowl is sub-oval with a wider, more squared off end near the stem (the shoulders) and fairly straight sides. There is a maker's mark of I spoon R?, punched on the front of the bowl near the stem. This latter has been broken at its junction with the bowl. There are extensive traces of a white metal coating on the bowl's interior. The bowl shape is consistent with a latten trifid spoon in latten dated c. 1680 by Homer (1975, 46; ref. f), thought it is similar to the slightly earli…

Object type: SEAL MATRIX
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Somerset
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A fragment of a post-medieval copper-alloy pedestal type seal matrix with an oval sectioned handle, now mostly missing. The face of the seal is oval with a basic incised border around a ?weeping eye, the tears rendered by incised wavy lines below. The handle is broken just above the back of the seal face but would probably have had a suspension loop at the end; alternatively this may have travelled towards the centre of a multi-die matrix. Read (1995, 152) illustrates post-medieval seal matrices which he dates to the 17th century.

A copper-alloy ('latten') spoon handle terminal of the baluster seal knop type. There is just a stub of the stem of the handle surviving: enough to show that its cross-section was sub-oval with a diameter of c. 5.9mm. The knop begins with a shallow double circular collar; the baluster part then flares out to a width of 9.5mm. The baluster is decorated with longitudinally incised lines. Above the baluster are a further pair of collars, the upper larger and decorated with longitudinally incised lines. The knop then flares out into a sub-oval seal top, 13.8 by 11.6mm, though now abraded,…

Flanking the beginnings of the ornamental knop is an integral perforated knop to each side. Two further attachment knops protrude from the widest part of the plate, giving a total of four such loops. Copper-alloy open type thimble or 'sewing ring' of late medieval or early post-medieval date. The sides are splayed and the base is wider than the top. The ring has fairly regularly spaced stamped triangular pits arranged in three to four rows around the sides. There is no evidence of a makers mark but it is badly corroded. It is 21.9mm by 19.3mm at the base and 11.2mm high; it weighs 5.13 grams. The splayed sides allow an easier fit on the finger and is also chronologically diagnostic to the late medieval or early post-medieval periods (Holmes 1988: 3). It is similar to Holmes (ib…

Copper-alloy mount of elaborate openwork with a broken hook at one end, dating to the post-medieval period. The object is largely pointed oval in plan, extending at one end into a curved hook with broken tip. At the other end is a lozengiform knop with small trefoil tip. The centre of the mount is shaped by four trefoil shaped perforations that create an internal web that is complicated, but has longitudinal symmetry. Where the four central ribs meet the edge of the mount there are small bifid protrusions. The hook begins with a pair of addorsed crescentic mouldings. Above these lat…

A cuboid terminal with integral rod of circular cross-section emerging from the centre of one face. The cuboid 'head' has rounded corners. The rod has been truncated at bent to one side at its current tip. The piece is corroded and the colour of the corrosion product suggests a post-medieval date, although an earlier one ought not to be ruled out. It is uncertain what the function was of this object. It measures 30.8mm long (16.8mm excluding the rod) by 17.2mm wide by 17.9mm thick; it weighs 34.13g.
