A small decorative post-medieval cast copper-alloy mount with a pair of spikes on the reverse, bent inwards such that they overlap slightly. The mount has an elongated, broadly triangular body, with transverse ridges at the uppermost terminal and a scallop-shaped protruding terminal at its base. The upper surface of the mount is rounded, the main element with engraved lines that follow the sides to create a rough triangle. An Iron Age La Tène IBa type brooch dating to the 4th to 3rd centuries BC, incomplete in so far as it is missing its pin. The brooch comprises a sprung head, a curved bow and foot with catch-plate. The brooch has been made in one piece. The head is formed from the top of the bow, which becomes thinner and circular in section forming a thick wire. This coils twice to the left of the bow (when in plan), loops over the top of the head and coils twice towards the centre. At this point the wire has broken, but would have formed the pin. Within the coils is a corroded crude bar in copper a…

A copper-alloy uniface weight for a noble. The weight is circular and flat with a raised design on one side only. The design is of a facing ship with fore and aft castles. It is 16.9mm in diameter, 4.1mm thick and weighs 6.28 grams, 96.9 grains. The metal is pitted in places, especially on the lower surface. A full weight noble would have weighed 108 grains between AD 1412 and 1464 (Withers and Withers 1995, 68); the earlier noble had a higher mass. Weights were normally made to the legal minimum weight which was slightly less and can lose weight through corrosion processes. This…

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A broken and incomplete figurative copper-alloy mount of medieval date (c. 12th/13th century AD). The mount would probably have depicted a saint full length, by reference to similar items discussed below; only the upper half of the torso and the head survive. The figure is shown facing holding a book in their right hand, through which a rivet hole has been drilled. An old break has occurred below this, largely diagonal, but also having removed some of the right arm. The body of the object is sub-rectangular and convex. The head above is moulded and set forward of the mount. A nose and…

A cast copper-alloy front-piece from two-piece dagger scabbard chape of post-medieval (16th-century) date, broken in two unequal parts. The chape has a central crudely made heart-shaped aperture. There is a ridge that follows the curve at the attachment end. The back is hollow, with the sides curving down to meet a sheet back plate which is now missing. The break has occurred through the aperture, to one side. Chapes of similar form w…

A complete openwork post-medieval strap-fitting (belt mount) with a pair of integral prongs. The mount is formed of a pair of back-to-back C-shaped elements with scrolled terminals and a protruding pellet at each outer edge. Where they meet there are trefoilate extensions at the mount's centre. The C-shaped elements are delineated by finely incised lines. The prongs are located at the centre of each outer edge. They are rectangular with rounded corners in cross-section and travel upward before curving in and downwards towards the centre. One of the prongs has been bent to the side…

A fragment from a cast copper-alloy spoon of post-medieval date. The fragment comprises the top of the bowl and a short length of the handle tapering like a 'rat-tail' on the underside of the bowl. The handle is trapezoidal in cross-section. The break to the top of the bowl is diagonal and old, around the point at which the handle terminates. The fragment is largely grey but with some small patches of light-green corrosion product suggesting a leaded copper alloy.

A post-medieval copper-alloy buckle with separate pin and stud chape surviving largely intact. The frame of the buckle is symmetrical, comprising two roughly 'D-shaped' sides which curve downwards in profile either side of the axis bar. At the centre of each of the two curved outer ends is a moulding with engraved, opposing oblique lines, which at one end acts as a pin rest with central groove. A virtually complete copper-alloy clog or shoe clasp of late post-medieval date (AD c. 1790 - c. 1850). The clasp is sub-rectangular in plan with an integral 'anchor'-shaped hook on the lower surface, abraded at one tip. At the opposite end the attachment hook has been broken off. The main body is formed of three groups of transverse bars, one centrally and one at each end, with recessed V-shaped protrusions between the. Each bar is decorated with two transverse grooves which thus create three ridges. These travel the length of each bar with the exception of that at the centre whic…

A copper alloy T-shaped brooch of early Roman date. This Wilsford type brooch is incomplete in as much as it is missing its pin. The cylindrical wings conceal the copper-alloy axis bar for the hinged pin. Their upper surfaces are decorated with two incised lines at each end. The head of the pin has a pointed projection for tensioning, but this is all that survives of the pin (loose). The bow has a D-shaped cross-section and projects forward from the wings. The head, pin and upper part of the bow are missing to old breaks; the rest of the bow, the leg and catch-plate survive. The head is lost to a horizontal break, at which point the bow has also been twisted. The bow is sub-rectangular in cross-section.
