Loop/eye part of a two part cast copper alloy dress fastener of Post-Medieval, 17th century date (AD 1600-1700). The fastener is flat and largely pointed oval in plan with an integral rectangular loop at one end of the main plate and a grooved ornamental knop at the other, reminiscent of a scallop shell. Flanking the beginnings of the ornamental knop is an integral perforated knop to each side. Two further attachment knops protrude from the widest part of the plate, giving a total of four such loops. The front of the plate is decorated with a moulded human facing bust with clusters of…

A corroded and slightly abraded copper-alloy post-medieval dress fastener in the form of a scallop. This is the eye section of such fasteners, with its rectangular loop intact. The plate is shallowly convex with incised radiating grooves. The reverse is plain and recessed. At the top of the shell is a circular attachment loop. A further pair are located one either side at the base, one of these had abraded through. A parallel can be found illustrated in Read (2008, 174; ref. 659), slightly more elongated; for a hook-piece of similar proportions see ibid. (2008, 174; ref. 657), there c…

A post-medieval copper-alloy dress fastener, sub lozengiform. This is the eye section of such fasteners, with its rectangular loop intact. The central area of the plate has a raised foliate design with a central quartered berry and four leaves in cross formation with four small circular berries in the angles. This design is within a broadly lozengiform line border formed of four lines with scrolled ends, at the middle corners forming a pair of projecting rounded knops at either side. There are two pierced lobes flanking the hook, one either side. At the opposite end to the hook is a t…

A post-medieval cast copper-alloy dress fastener eye-piece (16-17th century AD). It has an oval plate with three loops for attachment: two at the base, protruding to each side, and one at the other end with small lateral pellets at its base giving the effect of a debased trefoil. There is a debased bifurcated knop midway along the long sides; both are now abraded. An integral rectangular loop emerges from the pair of attachment loops at the base. It has been bent upwards at an angle of around forty degrees. The upper surface of the panel is decorated with a moulded human en-face mask …

A slightly damaged post-medieval cast copper-alloy dress fastener hook-piece (16-17th century AD). It has an oval plate with three loops for attachment: two at the base, at its junction with the hook, protruding to each side, and one at the other end with small lateral pellets at its base giving the effect of a debased trefoil. There is a debased bifurcated knop midway along the long sides; both are now abraded. An integral flat rectangular hook emerges from the pair of attachment loops at the base. It curves upwards before an old break which has removed the tip. The upper surface of …

An incomplete cast copper-alloy dress fastener of post-medieval date (c. 17th century). It has broken at the attachment end such that it cannot be established whether this is a loop or hook part of the two-part fastener. In addition to the break the object has been bent slightly at that end. The object is flat and largely sub-oval, with three integral knops; one at the centre of each side, and one at the centre of the narrower end of the plate. The latter is broken through while the others survive intact; they are perforated and have a small knop on their outer edge. The front of the…
