An unusual porcine fitting of the insular La Tène tradition, probably dating from the 1st century BC to 1st century AD. It is possible this fitting is for a vessel, but it is so far unparalleled in type. There are two other ‘head’ fittings known (OXON-6E3722 and HESH-06696B), but they are very different in design, and this find does not appear to be related to them. The lack of the portrayal of tusks, a hint of a dorsal ridge and large, pointed, forward facing ears are not definitive enough to label this example a wild boar, and so it is classed as a porcine of mix…

A Late Iron Age/early Roman (AD20-80) copper-alloy Colchester two-piece brooch, incompletein so far as it is missing the elements of its catch-plate, and much of its pin. The wings are short, flat and rectangular. Behind the wings is a hook that curves upwards to retain the axis bar, and, above this, an integral hook curved back on itself to retain the chord. The spring mechanism survives intact, around its axis bar, the chord retained within the rearward hook. There are two coils to each side; on one side the innermost coil develops into the pin which has been truncated after only c.…

An incomplete Late Iron Age/early Roman (AD20-80) copper-alloy Colchester one-piece brooch missing the majority of the catch-plate, the spring and pin. The wings are flat and rectangular; one significantly truncated, the other bent upwards at its end. Behind the wings is a hook that curves upwards to retain the axis bar, and, above this, an integral hook, now distorted and bent outwards, which would have retained the chord. No decoration is visible on the bow which tapers towards the tip. The bow has a sub-rectangular cross-section, with flat upper and lower surfaces and rounded sides…

Upper part of the bow and head of a Late Iron Age cast copper alloy birdlip type brooch. The lower part of the bow, pin, foot and catchplate are missing. It the top of the remaining section the bow is oval with a concave back. This probably formed the trumpet shaped head with a spring held in the concave section, although the attachment is lost. The edges of this oval head are damaged, particularly around the lower edges and it may have been larger originally. From this oval top the bow rises at 90 degrees before bending over abruptly and running relatively straight to the foot. In…

A cast copper-alloy fragment moulded in the round in the form of a bovine head, possibly of Late Iron Age/early Roman date. The creature has a snout that curves upwards at the tip, broadly circular in cross-section, and with a triangular flat area on the tip's upper surface to represent a nose. The sides of the upper surface behind this are bevelled. Behind this are oval eyes moulded in low relief. At right angles to the back of the snout is a neck of sub-triangular cross-section. This has been truncated below the snout as a result of old damage. At the top, behind the eyes, are two a…

An Iron Age La Tène IBa type brooch dating to the 4th to 3rd centuries BC, incomplete in so far as it is missing its pin. The brooch comprises a sprung head, a curved bow and foot with catch-plate. The brooch has been made in one piece. The head is formed from the top of the bow, which becomes thinner and circular in section forming a thick wire. This coils twice to the left of the bow (when in plan), loops over the top of the head and coils twice towards the centre. At this point the wire has broken, but would have formed the pin. Within the coils is a corroded crude bar in copper a…

An incomplete copper-alloy bow brooch of La Tene III/Nauheim-derivative form. Such brooches probably date from the 1st century AD. The brooch has been made in one piece, the top of the flat oval-sectioned bow extending into the beginnings of the spring coil. The unperforated catch-plate has been made by hammering flat the lower end of the bow into a sub-rectangular tab, slightly abraded and bent to one side. The bow travels steeply from the head to the crest of the bow before a gradual curve down to the foot. A similar brooch can be found illustrated in Hattatt (2000, 290; ref. 12)…

A fragment from a cast copper-alloy Late Iron Age to Roman bow brooch of 1st century AD date. The fragment consists of the upper bow and the head; the rest of the brooch has been lost to old damage. The bow is formed of a broad rectangular thick plate, abraded to one side following the break at its present base. The bow features four moulded longitudinal ridges, at its sides, with two between. In the recesses within the ridges is finely incised decoration in rocker arm. The head is a hollow cylinder with abraded tips. At its centre the head of the pin survives as a vestige withi…
