Object type: SPEARHEAD
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: County of Herefordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Incomplete spearhead of probable Late Bronze age date - probably associated with either the final phases of the Penard, or more likely the Blackmoor or Ewart Park metalworking traditions; these correspond with the end of Needham's (1997) Period 6 to Period 7, dated to c. 1150 - 750 BC. The fragment of spearhead consists of the lower part of the blade and upper part of the socket. Both the tip of the spear and the base / mouth of the socket are missing. Due to the nature of the fragment many diagnostic elements are not present. The method to secure the spearhead to the shaft of the …

Therefore, accurate dimensions of the spears length and width cannot be given. The spearhead is broadly sub-triangular in plan and profile with an irregular cross section. The top of the fragment consists of the upper part of the central rib and is lozenge shaped in cross section; the spe…

The fragment narrows along its length and its cross-section changes from a shallow C section at the base to an angular U shaped section at the opposite end. The fragment is likely to be waste from a miscast with only one part of the mould being filled with bronze. The casting fragment measures 37.5mm length, has a …

An unidentified artefacts possibly a coin / token or a coin weight of post medieval date (1600-1700). The stamp / die is circular with a beaded border - within this are the initials C R below which is a numeral I - it is possible the C R could read G R. The rest of the piece is undecorated. The reverse face is even more difficult to interpret - with the design being very indistinct - it …

The upper edge of the fitting is lost - it is formed from a sheet of copper alloy and been bent / folded to form a U shaped hook - the hook is the widest part terminating in a wide sub-triangular wedge. There are no rivet holes present - and therefore the plate probably extended from the broken edge and it is here that it would be fitted to the strap. The strap fitting is a mid-light green colour with an uneven abraded patina. This abrasion has removed much of the surface and d…
