A small fragment of a cast copper alloy double looped buckle of post-medieval date (1620-1680). The buckle frame is broken and approximately 1/4 survives. The fragment is broadly L shaped in plan with a slight integrally cast central bar. The pin is lost. The upper surface of the buckle is decorated with a series of debased lines and ring and dot decoration. The reverse of the buckle is plain and undecorated. The buckle is a mid grey-green colour with an abraded and slightly corroded patina that covers all surfaces. Movement in the ploughsoil has resulted in the buckle becoming asymmet…

Cast copper alloy buckle of later post-medieval date (1690 - 1720). The frame of the buckle is rectangular in plan and curved / bowed in profile. The frame is drilled at the mid-point and a central iron axis bar fitted through which the pin and strap end are fixed. The chape and axis bar seem to be formed from sheet iron which has corroded and encased the central element of the frame. The pin is lost. The frame is decorated with a simple geometric design consisting of vertical and horizontal grooves that overlap at the corners. The buckle is of a light - mid green colour and has an ev…

An incomplete cast copper alloy buckle frame broken into two parts of post-medieval date (1660-1720). The frame of the buckle was sub-rectangular (rectangular with rounded corners) in plan with two central drilled holes to which an iron (?) axis bar (not present) would have fitted. The frame is broken into three parts of which two have been recovered and conjoin - approximately 80% survives. There is no evidence of a pin rest on the frame. At the mid-point the frame is thickened by two lentoid shaped panels with a median ridge. The buckle is mid green colour with an even patina that co…

Cast copper alloy single looped buckle of probable medieval or post medieval date 1350 - 1650 AD. The buckle frame is an oval D shape (kidney shaped) in plan and irregular in cross section varying from a flattened oval to D shaped. The pin is missing but it is likely that it would have been formed from a sub-rectangular length of copper alloy. There is no pin rest present or constriction on the frame to enable the pin to lie flat. It is likely that a rectangular shaped buckle plate formed from a sheet of copper alloy fitted to one long edge. The plate would have been attached to the bu…

Cast copper alloy annular buckle of later medieval date (1200-1400). The buckle is complete being circular in plan with an irregular oval cross section. The edges of the buckle are faceted. There is no evidence for a constriction within the frame of the buckle to which a pin would fit. There is also no evidence of a recessed pin rest or incised or applied surface decoration on the frame. The pin is complete, relatively large and undecorated; the tip of the pin is formed into a blunt V shaped point. It is attached to the brooch by a single loop which has been folded to secure the join. …

Fragment from a sheet metal plate - most probably a buckle plate of later medieval date (1200-1500 AD). The plate is irregular in plan and profile (originally being flat - now curled and distorted). No original edges survive, although one potential rivet hole is present along one edge. The upper surface is decorated with two parallel incised lines that probably form a border to the entire plate. The reverse surface is plain and undecorated. The artefact is a mid green colour with a well formed surface patina. The artefact measures 26.0mm length, is 25.8mm wide and 1.0mm thick; it we…

Cast copper alloy single looped buckle of medieval date (1200 - 1400). The frame of the buckle is circular with an off set attachment bar (D Shaped) in plan and is triangular shape in cross section. The pin is lost but the remains of a sheet buckle plate is present attached to the off set bar. The buckle frame is relatively plain. The only elements of decoration are two moulded rounded cylindrical knobs either side of the strap bar. The strap bar has been off set and also recessed at both the top and bottom edge. This allows the metal buckle plate to be attached flush with the frame. T…

Cast copper alloy double looped buckle of probable post-medieval date (1620-1680). The buckle frame is complete and is broadly rectangular in plan with a central bar. Fragment of cast copper alloy chape from a buckle of later post medieval date c. 1640 - 1720. The chape is formed from a single sub-rectangular cast copper alloy sheet. This sheet has been cut and folded around the axis bar, the integral pin is lost. The sheet has been cut to form a tapering and expanding design, with a sub-rounded terminal. Through this terminal a single cast copper alloy rivet is passed to secure the buckle to a leather strap. The upper plate is stamped with the makers name over two lines WIDIN/GER. The chape is a mid green colour. Similar examples to this chape can …

This sheet has been cut and folded around an axis bar to form a plate that allowed the buckle to be attached to the item of clothing. The sheet has been cut to form a tapering and expanding design, with a rounded terminal which is partially lost. Cast copper alloy double looped (spectacle) buckle of probably medieval or post-medieval date (1350-1650). The buckle frame is complete but much smaller than most examples of this type.
