Object type: BUCKLE
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Cast copper alloy two piece buckle of later post-medieval date (1660 - 1720). The frame of the buckle is sub-rectangular in plan (rectangular with rounded corners), and bowed in profile. The frame has been drilled to allow for a central iron axis bar through which the pin and strap-end would be fixed. The iron axis bar is missing has been lost – presumably through corrosion as large amounts of concreted orange (iron) corrosion is present on the frame close to the drilled holes. The frame of the buckle is decorated with a series of motifs. Either side of the drilled holes at the mid p…

Object type: BELL
Broad period: ROMAN
County: Shropshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Three fragments from a cast copper alloy bell of probable Roman date (100 – 300 AD). Although the fragments do not fit together it is likely that they come from the same bell. Originally it is likely that the bell was sub-circular in plan and domed or arched (bell shaped) in profile. The largest of the fragments consists of the upper portion of the bell with an integral cast sub-circular suspension loop positioned at the peak of the dome. This loop is complete, however, the upper edge is thinner than the others; this suggests that it has been worn through use. There is no evidence fo…

The chape is sub-triangular in plan and sub-rectangular in profile. The chape is cast in one piece with the front and rear plates extending higher than the sides. The base of the chape terminates in a rounded point. The chape measures 27.3mm in length, 24.9mm width, and is 9.9mm thick. The front and rear plates are 1.9mm thick. The chape weighs 8.75 grams. There is no decoration present on either the front or rear faces of the chape. On the…

Incomplete copper alloy brooch of Colchester derivative Polden Hill (the Dolphin, flat wing ends type), Mackreth 2011, 4.a-4.b, 4c, Plate 46.It is of Roman date (80-120 AD). The wings are semi-cylindrical with perforated wing / end caps. The wing caps are incomplete and the axis bar, spring and pin are missing. It is likely that the pin / spring would have been attached by an external chord to a (now broken) rearward facing hook. The remnant of this hook is located at the centre of the wings on the upper edge. The reverse of the head of the brooch (between the two wings) has an unusua…

The extant fragment consists of a decorated pin-rest and a series of floral (rose) decorations. A silvered / tin surface has been applied to the front face of the frame. Incomplete cast copper alloy double looped buckle of probable post-medieval date (1600-1750). The buckle frame is incomplete being broken into two parts across one of the loops. This break is relatively fresh and unabraded, probably being caused by movement in the ploughsoil. Originally in plan the buckle would have been sub-oval with a slight central bar to which a pin would have been attached. The pin is present but detached. It is formed from a single length of tapered copper alloy which has been bent around the central axis bar. The upper surface of the pin has been decorated with …

Silver short cross penny of uncertain ruler 1180-1247. The coin has been poorly struck with the best preserved face being the obverse. The reverse is a mirror negative image of the obverse and none of the lower die impression survives. This has been caused by the moneyer making a mistake during striking. The moneyer has not removed the previous struck coin from the die, which has stuck to the lower part of the die, and then been over-struck by this coin. This has resulted in a good obverse impression and the details of the other coin being impresssed in the negative on the reverse. …

Ceramic crucible of probable later Medieval or early post medieval date (1200-1600 AD). The crucible is incomplete and been abraded by flowing water creating smooth rounded edges to the profile. In plan the crucible is irregular; originally it would have been broadly circular, now it is an irregular ellipse. In profile it is an irregular sub-rectangular shape with a relatively narrow base which expands to an open mouth. The water worn damage present has affected one edge more than the other and so diameter of the base and mouth cannot be truly estimated. The fabric is extremely hard wi…

German Denar (Pfennig) of Cologne, struck under Archbishop Konrad von Hochstaden (1238-61) as 'Elekt' (1238-9); mint Soerst normally spelt Soest, (in Westphalia, east of Dortmund). Note he is depicted bare-headed; his coins as 'Minister' (1239-44) and Archbishop (1244-61) show him wearing a mitre. A similar example can be seen in the Coins section of an exhibition catalogue 'Die Zeit der Staufer'(Wüttembergisches Landesmuseum, 1977), p.111, no. 175.21 ( referenced as H. 653) and pl. 93, 7 and 8-9.
