Object type: CORE
Broad period: MESOLITHIC
County: County of Herefordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An irregular fragment of tertiary debitage - most probably the remains of a Mesolithic core of irregular shape that has been rolled in the ploughsoil. From the images provided it is possible to see the removal of narrow blades in two opposing directions. These platforms are at opposite ends of the debitage. The flint is a dark grey black colour. The flint has been heavily rolled in the ploughsoil; this has resulted in direct damage and irregular removals as well as a general surface abrasion. The core measures 38mm in length, 35mm width, and is 15mm thick.

Object type: BLADE
Broad period: MESOLITHIC
County: County of Herefordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A near complete flint blade of probable later Mesolithic date (6500BC - 4500BC). The flint tool is broadly sub-rectangular in plan and D shaped in cross section; it has been abraded in the ploughsoil. It is formed on a tertiary flake and there is no cortex present. The bulb of percussion is lost due to a break across the lower half of the blade that has removed the bulb and the striking platform. It is possible this edge has been trimmed as small areas of retouch is present. The dorsal face shows areas of clear flake removals and the direction of these removals may indicate that this …

An abraded tertiary debitage / waste flake of probable later Neolithic date (4500-2000 BC). The flake is irregular in form being broadly triangular in shape. The upper (dorsal) face has the remains of removal scars. The edges are slightly denticulaed but this is most likely due to movement in the ploughzone (plough bumble). The flake is very thin being a mid grey colour. The flakes measures 17mm length, is 15mm wide and 2mm thick

Object type: GUNFLINT
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: County of Herefordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A small rectangular gun flint of post medieval - modern date (1700-1850 AD). The flint is sub-square in plan , being trapezoidal in profile and section. The flint is a light mottled grey colour. The dorsal face has been knapped / worked on all four sides; this work consists of creating sloping edges to give it a trapezoidal side view. The ventral face retains the waves emanating outwards from the point of impact, but the bulb of percussion has been removed. The flint is unabraded suggesting it hasn't been used. The mottled grey nature of the flint suggests that it was produced locally…

A near complete flint blade of probable late Mesolithic date (6500BC - 4500BC). The flint tool is broadly sub-rectangular in plan and sub-triangular in cross section; it has been abraded in the ploughsoil. It is formed on a primary flake. The bulb of percussion is present on the ventral face, although the striking platform has been lost to modern abrasion. The dorsal face is covered with 50% cortex which is a grey white colour. The long edges of each side of the blade have been retouched with relatively crude and disorganised secondary flaking - this is most evident on the ventral fac…

An incomplete knapped and flaked flint knife blade / scraper of later Neolithic or Early Bronze Age date (3000-2000BC). The knife is formed on a flake of secondary debitage. The fragment is broadly oval in plan and has a D shaped cross section. The dorsal face has multiple flaking facets and the edges have been retouched with neat well organised overlapping flakes which can be described as invasive semi-abrupt and stepped. A small area of yellow cortex is present on the dorsal face and this is stained an orange colour by the environment. From this area of cortex relatively neat flake…

An abraded tertiary debitage / waste flake of probable later Mesolithic date (6500-4500 BC). The flake has been abraded within the ploughzone resulting in an irregular shape. Originally it was rectangular in form with a distinctive bulbar scar on the ventral face and prepared platform on the distal end. The dorsal face has a central crested ridge. All other removals are modern and the blade has been rolled in the topsoil. The flint is a coarse grained mid- grey black colour consistent with locally utilised chert. The blade measures 20mm length, is 13mm wide.

An abraded tertiary debitage / waste flake of probable later Neolithic date or Early Bronze Age date (3500-1800 BC). From the form of the flake it is possible that this is an aborted barbed and tanged arrowhead discarded during knapping. A large pale grey coloured inclusion is present that would have prevented finer working. The flake is irregular in form having been struck as a blade like flake. One edge has been worked to create a pseudo-tang. The dorsal face is more heavily worked than the ventral although there is no evidence of retouch / finer working. The flint is a dark grey bl…

The flake is broadly rectangular in plan and wedge shaped in cross section. The retouch has been applied to only the dorsal face on two edges and is best described as poorly organised short, sub-parallel and semi-abrupt. The flint is a brown black colour with a distinctive cream coloured cortex. It is likely that this secondary retouch is applied to utilise a waste flake and discarded shortly after creation. The f…

An irregular struck flake of Neolithic date (4000-2500 BC). The flake has been struck in multiple directions during the tertiary phase of the tool production most probably during the making of a large core tool - the flake shows multiple removals in opposing directions on the dorsal face. It is relatively thin and a mid grey colour. It is possible that it may have been worked along one edge to form a crude scraper The flake measures 28.1mm in length, 13.7mm width, is 6.6mm thick and weighs 2.89 grams.

The axe is knapped from a flint which has banded colours which range from a bale cream buff through to a deep chocolate brown. There are areas of mid orange staining across the body and this is possibly as a result in the burial environment - possibly indicating deposition within soils that are iron rich or have a predilection towards iron panning / waterlogging.
