Piano Hoard - Summary of findings 2016-T969 (Bishop's Castle Shropshire) I have examined a group of 913 coins reported found hidden within a Broadward Piano from Bishop's Castle Shropshire. The coins are listed in the attached report. Discussion of the find The 913 coins are all British gold coins, mostly sovereigns (634), but with a considerable number of half-sovereigns (280). The face value of the group was therefore £773. They were struck to the same standard, 91.7% gold. Most of the coins were struck at the London mint, but a significant proportion originated in …

Cast copper alloy pommel long dagger or sword of probable later Medieval date (1000-1300). The pommel is broadly oval in plan, with a horizontal upper and lower edges and curved sides. In profile it is lentoidal. A small sub-rectangular cast hole (measuring 12mm x 4.5mm) is present at the mid point of the lower edge and a smaller elliptical hole is presnt at a similar point on the upper edge (measuring 7.8mm x 3.7mm). A near complete cast copper alloy brooch of Colchester derivative Polden Hill type of Roman date (80-120 AD). The wings are complete with flat and pierced end caps. A knapped and flaked flint scraper of later Neolithic date (3000-2000BC). The scraper is broken and incomplete it is formed on a flake of tertiary debitage. The scraper / knife is broadly oval in plan and irregular in cross section. The ventral face suggests it was struck in the opposite direction to the dorsal face.
