Object type: SCRAPER (TOOL)
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: County of Herefordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A large knapped and flaked flint scraper of later Neolithic date (3000-2000BC). The scraper is unusual as it is formed from a large piece / flake of primary debitage. It seems to have been formed crudely and possibly discarded relatively swiftly; this is unusual in an area which has very small natural reserves of flint. The scraper / knife is broadly oval in plan and irregular in cross section. The ventral face suggests that it was struck using an uncontrolled blow which shattered the rock. It is possible this primary damage may actually have been natural and then the flakje has been …

Object type: SPUR
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: County of Herefordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Fragment from the terminal of a cast copper alloy spur of probably post medieval (1600-1750) date. The fragment consists of the pierced terminal and small fragment from the arm. The break is old and much worn; it is lentoid in cross section. The terminal is pierced in three places by cast holes, the upper and lower are functional with a diameter of 3.8mm whilst the middle is drilled and has a conical shape. The upper and lowe holes would have held hooked buckles or small mounts which would have fitted onto the straps which held the spur to the foot. These holes are relatively worn - e…

Object type: CAME
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: County of Herefordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A lead post medieval casting waste from a window came dating to the period c. AD 1600 - 1700. The came is trapezoidal in shape with three H-sectioned projections descending from the lower edge. The strip has a depression at the centre and smooth surface. There is a casting seam visible on both of the short sides. By reference to similar waste from London a 17th-century date can be suggested (Egan 2005, 147; ref. 782). The lead has a grey patina with traces of white along the edges where there has been more recent damage.
The window came measures 35.2mm in length, 14.1mm in width, i…

An incomplete cast copper alloy Colchester derivative Polden Hill type brooch of Roman date (80-120 AD). The wings are near complete with flat and pierced end cap. A cast copper alloy strap distributor or suspension fitting of uncertain date. The fitting is formed from thickly cast copper alloy and is broadly circular in plan and domed (D shaped) in cross section. The dome is pierced by three cast and worn oval shaped holes (av. 7.8mm) positioned symmetrically on the mid-section of each side. Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A heavily eroded and corroded copper alloy folding razor or knife dating from the later Roman period (200- c. 400 AD). Although fragmentary this form of knife usually depicts in openwork a hound biting the rump of a hare. This fragment is too heavily eroded to identify further but in size form and shape conforms to this object type. The fragment is a mid light purple brown with significant areas of metal loss due to corrosive pitting. A number of similar razors can be seen on the PAS website for example a complete razor from Great Cressingham, Norfolk (NMS-606F33 / http://finds.org.u…

The head of the brooch is relatively well preserved being oval in plan, and expanding into the bow. The reverse of the head is flat and has a cast projecting bar which divides the head into two parts. This bar has a large circular perforation which is worn: the spring and pin are missing. A heavily eroded and corroded silver coin like disc of uncertain date - the find is thicker than a milled coin and looks as if it has been struck rather than milled. It is also thicker than conventional medieval and post medieval struck / hammered coins (based on its relevant size). Therefore, it is possibly a debased Roman coin of some sort. It has been found close to an area of Roman denarii

A much abraded cast copper alloy zoomorphic terminalled strap end of later early medieval (later Anglo-Saxon) date, 800 - 1000 AD. Cast copper alloy fragment from a hooked strap fitting of probable post-medieval date (1500-1700). The strap fitting is broadly sub-rectangular in plan.
