Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A large fragment from a knapped, ground and polished stone axehead of later Neolithic date (2900-2100 BC). The axe is knapped from a dark grey black volcanic tuff. This rock type is formed from compressed volcanic ash and has a fine grained composition; there are no signs of inclusions within the exposed fresh surface, but the axe is very heavy for its size possibly suggesting large iron content. The broken edge is a much lighter colour to the polished surfaces. Tuff is found in Britain and Ireland in a band that runs down the Irish Sea from the Lake District (the Langdale's source Gr…

A fragment of knapped flint knife - or possibly a reworked projectile point of later Neolithic or Early Bronze Age date (2900 BC - 1800 BC). The flint is sub-triangular in plan and an irregular trapezoid in cross section. The flint has been worked from a larger flake and the ventral face shows evidence of conchoidal ripples. The two long edges of the dorsal face show evidence of significant retouch which has been applied through pressure flaking; these have created a neat serrated edge. The lower short edge has several areas of vertical knapping on the butt suggesting it has been del…

Fragment of secondary debitage possibly from Mesolithic or earlier Neolithic tool making, all the flaking is in one direction. In plan the fragment is rectangular - in cross section triangular. Several long flake scars are present on the dorsal face. These cut through the small area of cortex present. The ventral face shows evidence of conchoidal ripples but the bulb of percussion is lost. Small areas of potential retouch are present along one edge; however this is direct retouch produced with a hard hammer, and could alternatively be created by abrasion / movement in the soil. Th…

A small rectangular gun flint probably from a small handgun / firearm / pocket pistol of post medieval - modern date (1700-1850 AD). The flint is sub-square in plan and trapezoidal in profile and section. The flint is a light mottled grey colour. The dorsal face has been knapped / worked on all four sides; this work consists of creating sloping edges to give it a trapezoidal side view. The ventral face retains the waves emanating outwards from the point of impact, but the bulb of percussion has been removed. The flint is unabraded suggesting it hasn't been used. Flint thumb nail (horseshoe) scraper of later Neolithic or Early Bronze Age date (2300 -1800BC). The scraper is formed from a mottled grey coloured piece of flint with a relatively thick white surface patina. It is created from a tertiary flake (due to the size of the scraper this may originally be debitage). The ventral face shows clear evidence of conchoidal fractures that ripple across the underside of the flake; the point of percussion and the bulb of percussion have both been removed. A rim fragment from a cast copper alloy vessel of probable post medieval date. The rim flares outwards suggesting it formed part of a small mortar. The fragment is decorated with four circumferential lines, two close to the rim and a pair slightly further down. Beneath this - under the rim - are the remains of a possible inscription: consisting of a six pointed star followed by the letter A. The grey silverish colour of the metal suggests a leaded bronze. The breaks are all patinated but relatively fresh suggesting little movement in the ploughsoil. An alternative suggestion would be…
