Object type: PHALLIC OBJECT
Broad period: ROMAN
County: Oxfordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Incomplete cast copper alloy phallic votive model or pendant of Roman date probably 100-300 AD. There is some debate as to whether this is a pendant or not, a small knop is present at the rare of the object and is incomplete. However, it may be a stud, or more likely be a broken pendant loop. The phallic object is broadly sub-rectangular in plan and broadly sub-triangular in cross section. It tapers from front to back. The rear of the model is relatively flat with an abraded knop projecting relatively centrally. The edge of the model has a raised ridge which extends from one edge to th…

Object type: NAIL CLEANER
Broad period: ROMAN
County: Oxfordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Cast copper alloy fragment from either a nail cleaner or possibly the terminal from a strap end of Roman period date possibly mid - late 1st or 2nd century AD. If this example is a nail cleaner then it fits best within Crummy class 2a. The fragment has been broken across the body and this break is both worn and patinated suggesting it is relatively old. The knop at the top of the fragment is also incomplete but this break is more recent; if this is a nail cleaner then it is here that the loop would have been – it is impossible to tell whether the loop would have been in the same plan…

Cast copper alloy fragment, probably from a piece of furniture, of probable post medieval or early modern date (1600-1800). The fragment is made from an alloy with a considerable amount of lead in it. It is incomplete and irregular in plan whilst being sub-rectangular in cross section. The fragment seems to be entirely decorative being moulded in both planes with a similar floral / curvi-linear design. On one face this design may be best described as consisting of a bird holding a ball in it its beak, whilst the other face is more abstract. Similar designs can be seen on relatively ear…

Cast lead or lead alloy gaming piece of unknown date, but probable later medieval or post medieval origin. The gaming piece is broadly cylindrical in shape tapering from the head to the base. It is decorated with three faces / face like masks; these are realised in three dimensions. Each face is made up of elements of the next therefore there are three noses and three eyes on the piece forming three faces. Each face is similar to the next and they are relatively crude in construction. The elements are all cast and the eyebrows and nose are cats as one large V shape with curled axis. Th…

Cast copper alloy nail cleaner of Grooved Collar Type, broadly dated to the Roman period: mid-late 3rd to 4th century AD. The nail cleaner is broadly sub-rectangular in plan and cross section. It tapers in thickness from head to base and in width it similarly tapers but then expands. At the head of the nail cleaner is an irregular cast loop; the upper inner edge of the loop is worn suggesting that it has been suspended. The inner diameter of the loop is 3.4mm. From the loop the nail cleaner expands and is broadly circular in cross section. Beneath the loop are two cast raised bands se…
