Object type: ANNULAR BROOCH
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: County of Herefordshire
Workflow stage: Published
A medieval silver annular brooch. The frame is formed from silver wire, half of which is round in section, while the other half has been formed into square wire, twisted to give the appearance of cabling, with punched decoration running along the twists. There is a constriction for the pin (now missing), at which point the brooch is broken, probably at the point of the original soldering. The brooch is otherwise in good condition. The brooch dates to the 13th-14th century. This is a well-known type of medieval brooch. See SUSS-7AC4AA; HAMP-999097 and DOR-715865 for similar examples.

A fragment from the lower bow and foot of a cast copper alloy brooch most probably of Roman date (AD50-350). The alloy of the metal is relatively unusual seeming to be heavily leaded creating a very grey coloured alloy. The form of the brooch comprises an angular bow which has transverse ribs terminating in a large moulded D shaped bead from which an oval shaped foot descends. The reverse of the foot is flat and abraded but seems originally to have a small vertical rib that formed a slight catch plate. The upper bow and head of the brooch is lost. The lower section of the flask and a small separate section of the neck of the vessel survive. The lower part has a rounded convex base that tapers slightly to form a waste at the mid point. It is at this point the flask is broken and the surface is patinated suggesting the damage is relatively old. The front face of the ampulla is decorated with cast design possibly a square topped heraldic shield which is filled with …

A heavily clipper silver penny of either Edward IV from his second reign 1471-1483, or Richard III 1483-5 - struck at the mint in York. Type XXI 4. If this is the case then the coin would have been struck under the authority of Archbishop Thomas Rotherham (1480-1500). The inscription has been almost entirely removed and the identification is based solely on the marks by the breast and estimated size and style of the coin. Without an inscription it is hard to tell whether the coin was struck under Edward IV or Richard III reign.

A complete but heavily abraded and corroded cast lead or lead alloy spindle whorl of Medieval to Post Medieval date (1150 - 1650 AD), most probably Medieval (AD12300 -1600). The spindle whorl was originally broadly circular in plan and bi-convex in cross section. A central hole is present which has a diameter of approximately 11mm in diameter, Both faces of the whorl are decorated - although one face is poorly preserved. Object type: CORE
Broad period: MESOLITHIC
County: County of Herefordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
An irregular fragment of tertiary debitage - most probably the remains of a Mesolithic core of irregular shape that has been rolled in the ploughsoil. From the images provided it is possible to see the removal of narrow blades in two opposing directions. These platforms are at opposite ends of the debitage. The flint is a dark grey black colour. The flint has been heavily rolled in the ploughsoil; this has resulted in direct damage and irregular removals as well as a general surface abrasion.
The core measures 38mm in length, 35mm width, and is 15mm thick.

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A near complete flint blade of probable later Mesolithic date (6500BC - 4500BC). The flint tool is broadly sub-rectangular in plan and D shaped in cross section; it has been abraded in the ploughsoil. It is formed on a tertiary flake and there is no cortex present. The bulb of percussion is lost due to a break across the lower half of the blade that has removed the bulb and the striking platform. It is possible this edge has been trimmed as small areas of retouch is present. The dorsal face shows areas of clear flake removals and the direction of these removals may indicate that this …

A stone spindle whorl of probable later Iron Age or Roman date (400 BC - AD 300). The spindle whorl is circular in plan and rectangular in profile. Through the middle of the whorl is a circular shaped hole set slightly off centre; the hole has straight sides and it has an approximate diameter of 7.5mm. The whorl is undecorated and is relatively unabraded with crisp fresh edges. The whorl is a grey brown colour. Spindle whorls are used for a long period of time and as such are very difficult to…
