Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A probable Medieval to Post-Medieval lead spindle whorl dating from c.1100-1800.
This sub-circular spindle whorl has a central hole with a diameter of 6.18mm. It is approximately plano-convex or "bun shaped" in profile. The spindle whorl has a dull creamy brown patina and is very worn. There appears to be an extra lump of lead attached to one half of the flat side and the join is uneven and clearly visible. Rather than being entirely flat to the ground there is a slight arc to a small area of the bottom edge on the flatter side.

This line only appears on one side. On the same side as this drawn line the lead around one half of the outer edge has the appearance of being folded over …

This complete cast lead circular spindle whorl is biconical, with a central hole with a diameter of 9.65mm. The spindle whorl is worn with a light cream coloured patina. This patina is not present around the rim of the central hole which is grey with a shiny appearance. Although the spindle whorl is worn there is clear cast decoration. The relief decoration consists of lines from the centre to the outer edge splitting the surface into nine areas with three raised dots in each area, this pattern is repeated on both sid…
