A sherd from a cordoned Roman vessel. The cord decoration is prominent and there are two incised lines above and below the cord. The vessel is oxidised orange on the outer surfaces with a reduced grey core. The fabric is fine grained with sparce inclusions of quartz less than 0.5mm in diameter, crushed shell and charcoal approximately 0.5mm - 1mm in diameter. This is a beach find and many inclusions have been lost or dissolved as a result of the action of the sea. Length: 56.9 mm, width: 50.1mm and thickness: 23.2mm. Weight 74.5g.

A pale mottled grey scraper. It is sub-oval, horseshoe shaped flint. The wide distal end has narrow, sub-parallel, semi-abrupt retouch along the entire edge. A notch has been worked into the left mesal with semi-abrupt retouch,perhaps to serve as a tool to trim arrow shafts. There is a prominent bulb of percussion on the ventral face. Brown flint scraper. A sub-rectangular shaped flint. Short broad and narrow flakes have been struck from the dorsal side. The slightly concave ventral surface is smooth apart from a prominent bulb of percussion at the left proximal end with shallow ripples of percussion emanating from this. There is semi-abrupt retouch to all edges and further semi-abrupt retouch executed to the left mesal of the dorsal side forms a notch, perhaps to serve as a tool to trim an arrow shaft. Suggested date: Late Mesolithic, 7000 - 4000 BC. Length: 49.0mm, width: 25.1mm and thickness: 11.8mm. Weight 12.0g.

A fine grained compacted pale sandstone whetstone fragment. The remaining fragment is sub-rectangular and rounded on the unbroken face. There are four smooth surfaces worn on the unbroken face, and the object appears to have been used to sharpen small implements, such as knives. The object fits comfortably into the palm of the hand for the purpose of sharpening implements. The use of probable local stone for sharpening stones is characteristic of the period between the later Iron Age and the middle Saxon period. A fine grained, pale grey, oblong shaped sandstone, with some plough damage at one end of the reverse face, used as a whetstone. Both faces are smoothed by wear, and the edges are rounded and show evidence of being used for sharpening blades. The improvised use of various stones from glacial drift for sharpening or rubbing stones is characteristic of the Roman and Early Medieval periods until the Viking Age, when Scandinavian stones from the Telemark region became widely available.
